Silver Lake’s city clerk moving on after 15 years of service

Kerry Venier has been the face out in front for the city of Silver Lake for 15 years, a tenure that will come to an end June 16 when he leaves his job as city clerk-treasurer for a new job in the utility department for the city of Duluth.
Venier is quick to point out that he is not leaving Silver Lake because he is unhappy there; in fact, he is the first to tout Silver Lake’s reputation as a close-knit community that cares for its residents.
But his family’s long-term plan has always been to return to its roots in the Duluth area. Venier’s family owns what was once a summer cabin, now remodeled for year-round use, in northern Wisconsin. The plan was always to buy the cabin from his mother as a retirement home.
The time has come, Venier said, that his mother is ready to move closer to her friends and the conveniences of the Duluth area, which is 30 miles from the lake home. The timing isn’t perfect for the Venier family — Kerry’s wife Jen will stay in Silver Lake for at least a couple of years as their youngest daughter finishes high school — but it seemed like time to make the move, he said.
Venier said that after college, he went to work for the city of Superior, and later for Marie’s Restaurant and Bruegger’s Bagels in the Twin Cities area. The family relocated to Silver Lake when he began working in the metro.
