Silver Lake to buy new fire tanker

Fire departments are known for being fiscally responsible and using their vehicles for as long as possible. But the time has come for the Silver Lake Fire Department to replace its 32-year old tanker truck.
Representatives from the fire department presented a proposal to the Silver Lake City Council on Monday, April 6, to purchase a 2007 heavy-duty pick-up truck chassis for $42,495 to replace the 1983 tanker truck.
The cost includes any modifications that would need to be made to support adding the tank.
Estimates on adding a 30,000-gallon tank are around $50,000 to $60,000.
The department was on a bit of a time restraint as there was other interest in the vehicle, located in Rogers.
The Council approved the purchase of the truck and asked the department to come to a future meeting with a firmer estimate on adding the tank, lights and lettering.
The fire department has around $82,000 in a trust held by the city from its fund raising efforts. The city and townships will also contribute to the purchase of the vehicle.
The department’s goal is to keep the project under $100,000. The cost of a new tanker truck is around $250,000.
