Silver Lake City Council approves water, sewer rate increases for 2016

With a new year around the corner and another budget in the works, the Silver Lake City Council reviewed its fee schedule for the upcoming year.
City Clerk Kerry Venier recommended an increase in the water and sewer usage fees to $4 per 1,000 gallons for water usage and $6 per 1,000 gallons for sewer usage.
He explained the city has an operating budget of  $122,842 for the sewer cost of $6.24 per 1,000 gallons. The current sewer usage rate is $5 per 1,000 gallons.
The operating budget for water is $86,412 or $4.39 per 1,000 gallons. The current rate is $3.05 per 1,000 gallons.
Venier said with the increases, penalties charged and other minimal income, the city will be able to cash flow both the water and sewer funds.
The Council asked about the base fees as the city looks aggressively at upgrading water and sewer lines and water quality within the city. The Council suggested a slight increase in the base fees as opposed to a larger increase down the road.
The Council approved the increases in usage fees, as well as a 50-cent increase per month for both the base water and sewer fees to $8.50 each per month.
