Silver Lake City Council decides to pursue cable access channel

Some new numbers have surfaced in the discussion of a potential cable access channel in Silver Lake. Duane Wawrzyniak had volunteered to take a look at the equipment that Lester Prairie has offered to sell to Silver Lake, and he came back with an evaluation and estimate for the City Council at its Tuesday, Feb. 17, meeting.
Lester Prairie spent $12,000 in 2013 to update its entire system, and would like Silver Lake to make a reasonable offer for its equipment. Wawrzyniak said that he evaluated all of the equipment and its features, and did some research to see what the cost would be to set up a similar system. He found comparable used equipment online that could be purchased for approximately $1,000. With this price in mind, City Clerk Kerry Venier approached Lester Prairie saying that this was the amount Silver Lake would be interested in paying for its equipment. While no official answer has been given, the representative from Lester Prairie said she doubted the city would accept such an offer.
The council asked Wawrzyniak how long this equipment would stay current, and how soon upgrades would be needed. He proposed that the city purchase the equipment for $1,000, and set aside that same amount each year as a fund for repairs or upgrades as needed.
