Silver Lake gets one bid for building demolition

The city of Silver Lake received one bid for consideration to raze the buildings at 121 and 125 Main Street at its Aug. 15 meeting.
That bid came from Litzau Excavating, Inc., of Lester Prairie, for $107,500, which would include tearing down the two properties, removing the material and filling in the hole.
It does not include any permits or asbestos abatement costs, if needed.
The two adjoining buildings were declared unsafe for occupancy or entry on May 19 after it was discovered that the roof had collapsed into the center of the two buildings, along with the common wall between the two buildings and the flooring on the first and second levels.
A big obstacle to the demolition is that the two buildings are in the center of four buildings, making demolition difficult.
The two outside buildings are privately owned. The council discussed razing all four buildings, but would need to purchase the two outside buildings that are currently owned by Mayor Bruce Bebo and Sumter Mutual Insurance.
The council authorized City Clerk Kerry Venier to seek additional bids for demolition as well as any special municipal financing that might be available.
