Silver Lake officer in accident

Part-time Silver Lake Police Officer Ross McMullen was involved in a two-vehicle accident, Thursday, July 19. McMullen was heading southbound on County Road 2 in the department’s 2017 Ford Explorer to provide mutual aid to the McLeod County Sheriff’s Department.
The sheriff’s office attempted to stop a 2010 Ford Mustang driven by Damian Michael Porter, 20 of Blaine, on Highway 7 and Kale Avenue, west of Silver Lake. A pursuit was initiated when Porter failed to stop. Porter crossed the center line hitting McMullen as he was in route. Upon further investigation, the sheriff’s department learned the Mustang was stolen from St. Croix County, Wisconsin.
McMullen, Porter and two passengers Emilio Santiago Rivera, 18 of North Branch and a 17-year old female, were all transported to local hospitals where they were treated and released with non-life threatening injuries.
Porter, Rivera and the minor passenger were arrested on multiple charges and booked into the McLeod County Jail.
The Silver Lake City Council held a special meeting on Friday night to discuss the incident which leaves the city without a squad car. They are currently using a vehicle from the sheriff’s office that has lights and a radio, but no computer mount. The department can make traffic stops but will need to hand write tickets. The department will need assistance from the sheriff’s department for DWI stops.
The sheriff’s department has a vehicle for sale, which Brownton was planning to purchase. The City of Silver Lake will be in contact with their insurance company and look into squad car options. They will call another special meeting if necessary.
