Silver Lake police chief, councilor submit resignations to Council

The Silver Lake City Council was faced with not one, but two resignations at its regular meeting on Monday, May 18.
Police Chief Forrest Henriksen submitted his resignation to the Council effective Aug. 8.
Henriksen recently became engaged to be married and his fiance lives and works in the St. Paul area where he will be moving.
“This has been one of the hardest decisions I have had to make,” Henriksen said, adding he really enjoyed his time in Silver Lake.
He gave advance notice to give the city time to find a replacement and help with the transition.
Henriksen also expressed interest in staying on as a part-time officer, which will be left to the decision of the new chief.
The Council accepted the resignation with regret. It will begin posting the open position as soon as possible.
The second resignation was that of Council Member Greg Gillett, who is moving out of Silver Lake.
In his letter of resignation, Gillett thanked the Council for the opportunity to serve on the Council.
The Council can either hold a special election to fill the position or appoint a replacement. A special election would cost between $3,000 and $5,000.
In the past, the Council has appointed open positions and made the decision to do the same. The open Council seat will be posted immediately. The term for the term on the open council seat ends in December 2016.
