Sonju explains operations levy

Hard to believe that we are in August and another new school year is right around the corner. I hope that this letter finds you enjoying your summer. Practices for fall activities have started and as we move closer and closer to the start of the school year, I want to take this opportunity to update our district members on a few things.
As many of you know, the GSL Board of Education has decided to ask our voters to support the operating levy this November. The operating levy is very different from the building bond that was supported by our voters in 2015. This operating levy is already in place. Our school board is asking the voters to continue to support it with an increase of $283.12 per pupil unit. This dollar amount allows the district to maintain its programs and services as best as possible while maximizing the amount of state aid we get from the State of Minnesota. More information about this topic will be coming in the weeks ahead as we get closer to Election Day in November. Please know that we are here to answer any questions you may have.
On another topic, one of the new initiatives that I want to start at GSL is our “Valued Stakeholders Group.” Conceptually, it is pretty simple. If you are a district resident, do not have kids in school, and would like to receive “school updates” a few times each month, please send me an email at csonju@gsl.k12.mn.us to sign up. I want our stakeholders to get updates on what is happening at school as much as our families.
We are still in the planning stage of addressing the north school parking lot. We understand that it needs to be fixed. Trying to find the most cost effective options is the difficult part. Please know that the district is conscious of costs and is working very hard to keep them to a minimum and at the same time, we need to do the project right.
It has been a very busy summer in preparing for the school year. I remember where we were last year nearing the end of our building project. Thankfully, we are not at that stage. It is nice to have a summer where we are getting back to the normal summer routine. Much work still needs to be done, but we are getting closer and closer to having everything ready to go. Open House Night will be on Aug. 29 from 3-6 p.m. in all of our buildings (Check-in times have been communicated for grades K-2 for this night). It will be nice to see all of the kids and their families back at school. Until then, thank you for your time and if there is anything I can help with, please do not hesitate to ask. I can be reached at my email above or via phone at 320-864-2498. Have a great rest of your summer.
