Spikers seek fifth straight WCC West championship

With eyes on a fifth consecutive Wright County Conference West title, the Glencoe-Silver Lake volleyball team opened its season with a pair of pre-Labor Day competitions.
Before the Panthers even got to their first match on Saturday, Aug. 25, the team already had much to be thankful for after hosting a scrimmage last week.
“2018 has started off on the right foot,” coach Lori Schwirtz said. “First and foremost, our program is so happy to be able to participate in a gym with air conditioning. It makes a huge difference on our performance abilities and restrictions. We are so thankful.”
After its well-ventilated home scrimmage, GSL opened its season on the road with a loss to North Branch in a Saturday afternoon matchup at Hopkins High School.
The Panthers were swept in three close games, losing 20-25, 19-25, 21-25. Schwirtz said that the team is happy to have the season off and running.
“I think all teams are in the same boat to start the season, getting back into shape and getting the team to gel,” she said.
