Spikers top Byron in opener

Heading into a pair of home matches this week, the Glencoe-Silver Lake volleyball team earned a season-opening victory against Byron in a match played at Hopkins High School on Saturday, Aug. 26.
The Panthers took their opener in a back-and-forth five-game match, clinched with a 17-15 victory in the finale.
“What an exciting match, especially hitting over a tall Byron Bears front line of 6-foot-5, 5-11 and 5-10,” coach Lori Schwirtz said.
Byron took the first game 25-19, with GSL rallying to win the next two 25-23 and 25-18 before the Bears forced a tiebreaker with a 25-19 game four win.
The Panthers led 11-5 in the fifth game before holding on for a two-point triumph and a 1-0 record.
Outside hitter Kasidy Cacka led GSL with 15 kills, while middle hitter Rhyan Herrmann and outside hitter Mckenna Monahan had 11 kills apiece. Libero Maren Roepke paced the Panthers with 22 digs, with setter Lexi Hansch’s 37 set assists leading the squad. Herrmann also had 17 digs, with Monahan and right hitter Olivia Lemke posting 14 and 14 digs, respectively.
The Panthers hosted neighboring Norwood Young America in the team’s home opener on Tuesday, Aug. 29, after the Chronicle went to press. Hutchinson is slated to visit GSL on Thursday night before the Panthers head to Eden Prairie for an invitational on Saturday morning.
