STEM, FFA featured at school luncheon

Superintendent Chris Sonju gave an update on the schools new science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) program to guests at the district’s community schools lunch on Friday afternoon.
Sonju explained that the STEM initiative will be implemented in kindergarten through sixth-grade alongside the current high school programs.
Lakeside Elementary Principal Joy Freitag explained that the district has been researching how to best fit the program with the school’s curriculum and standards. She said teachers are excited about the new program and the school has seen several examples of how other district’s teachers have implement the program for the benefit of the students.
“This is going to help them learn because they are engaged all the time,” Freitag said.
Lincoln Junior High Principal Dan Svoboda explained the idea came about four years ago with the high school programs, and the extension to elementary and junior high is the next step. He said these program will prepare students for future job markets.
“Our students are moving into a different world than all of us out here,” he said.
