Stewart City Council declines to purchase a street sweeper

The Stewart City Council decided not to purchase a newer street sweeper at its meeting Monday night.
City maintenance supervisor Matt Maiers said the city’s current sweeper, a 1991 Elgin Pelican, needs about $4,500 in repair, and presented quotes on four newer, but used, sweepers. The quotes ranged from $32,000 to $37,500.
City Council members said they understand the current sweeper will need to be replaced at some point, but felt the city should repair it for now.
“There’s quite a spread between the repair cost and the quotes,” said Council Member Curt Glaeser.
He suggested re-evaluating the situation in a year and encouraged Maiers to continue looking at used sweepers.
In other business, the City Council:
• Heard from engineer Andy Kehren of Bolton & Menk that Form-A-Feed is interested in a bypass road from County Road 7, east of the city, to the Form-A-Feed facility in the northwest part of the city.
