Stewart City Council to review fire service contract language

The Stewart City Council is meeting in special session tonight (Wednesday) at 6 p.m. to discuss its fire protection contract with area townships.
Following that meeting, the Council will meet jointly with officials from the townships it serves. That meeting is set for 7 p.m.
Council Member Kevin Klucas said at the City Council’s regular July 13 meeting that he is concerned about the language of the contract, in particular in how it outlines the ownership of the fire department’s trucks.
According to Klucas, the proposed contract indicates that the townships will have a share in ownership of trucks the department buys in the future.
“To me, this is more of a joint powers agreement than a contract for service,” said Klucas.
Mayor Jason Peirce said he believes the language is similar to prior contracts, but suggested that the city clerk e-mail copies of prior contracts for review prior to tonight’s meeting.
