Stewart City Council reviews bids for new north access road

The Stewart City Council received six bids for its proposed north access connector road been County Road 7 and Form-A-Feed.
Andy Kehren, engineer with Bolton & Menk, presented the bid information to the council Monday night.
Kehren said the new road was bid as both a base bid for just the road, and with an alternate to provide a passing lane and turn lane as requested by McLeod County.
The total bids, with both the base and the alternate, ranged from $793,077 to over $1 million said Kehren.
The lowest bid came from Northern Lights construction, at about 8 percent below the engineer’s estimate. Kehren said Northern Lights had a base bid of $714,772 and a bid of $78,305 for the bypass and turning lanes, for a total of $793,077.
Mayor Jason Peirce asked about the county requiring the additional lanes.
“We’ve been talking about this for 10 years, and it’s never come up until now,” said Peirce. He also pointed out that there are not even bypass lanes on Highway 212 near County Road 7.
Kehren said that the county is providing some funding through the tax abatement process.
