Stewart Council looks to fill vacancies

The Stewart City Council swore in its two re-elected council members Monday night — Carol Altrichter and Kevin Klucas — to ensure that it would have a quorum as it moves into 2017.
As Monday’s City Council meeting began, the city still did not have a mayor for 2017 nor one more council member.
Incumbent Mayor Jason Peirce, who did not seek re-election, earned 30 write-in votes, while Klucas received 29.
Joyce Nyhus, a former Buffalo Lake mayor who is now a liaison for the League of Minnesota Cities, was at Monday’s meeting and suggested that Peirce be sworn in to ensure that there was a mayor in January, even if he then chose to step down later if another candidate came forward.
Peirce said he had not decided if he will accept the job for another two years or not.
“I have some issues that I need to take care of before I can decide,” Peirce said.
However, at the end of the meeting, Peirce did take the oath of office, but said he still needs to consult with his family before making a final decision.
