Stewart increases council wages, changes pet ordinance

The Stewart City Council had a packed agenda and approved a flurry of items at its regular meeting on Monday night. The council, most notably, set annual and meeting wages for the council, made changes to the animal ordinance and finalized the hiring of a public works supervisor.
The council approved an annual salary bump for the mayor and council members, effective Jan. 1, 2019. The mayor’s salary will be increased to $1,500 per year, and the council members will each see a $300 raise to $900. Previously, the mayor was receiving $1,200, and the council members were getting $600, and they were all receiving $35 for each meeting.
On top of salary increases, the mayor and each council member will receive $50 for attending regular meetings and special meetings, as well as a mileage reimbursement for attending an out-of-city meeting at the federal rate. According to Stewart’s clerk, Ronda Huls, the city’s ordinance states the council can only see a wage increase on an election year.
