The Best Just Got Better
Brandpoint Content
The rituals of fall include sending kids
back to school, raking leaves and cheer-
ing on the hometown football team. In
addition, a new fall tradition has
emerged for America’s nearly 74 million
homeowners – home improvement.
This fall promises to be particularly
popular for
home projects.
Lower gas
prices are
boosting peo-
ple’s discre-
tionary income
and Metro
study’s latest
residential re-
m o d e l i n g
index points to a continued rise in activ-
ity.
Like many trends, there isn’t one par-
ticular reason fall has emerged as a pop-
ular time for home improvement; several
factors play a role.
Energy efficiency is top of mind
With colder weather on the horizon,
homeowners shudder at the thought of
higher heating costs. They upgrade win-
dows, layer in more insulation, service
or replace old furnaces and, in some
cases, do all of the above.
The weather is nice
Home improvement projects can be
hard and even grueling work, particu-
larly for DIYers. Lower temperatures and
humidity create a much more comfort-
able environment for getting things done
(and rhetorically keeping your cool when
obstacles inevitably arrive).
The holiday entertaining wow factor
Everyone wants their home to sparkle
when they welcome family and friends
during the holidays. Completing a home
improvement project during the fall sets
up a big reveal when the holidays roll
around.
Falling prices
Fall is an ex-
cellent time to
save money by
finding great
deals on home
i mprovement
supplies and
service. Year-
end sales begin and discounts can be
steep. Retailers like Lumber Liquida-
tors, with their annual Yard Sale in Oc-
tober, often have discounts to clear
inventory before the New Year. Also,
contractors are busiest during the
warmer months - their business cools as
the weather does.
Facing tight timelines and tighter
budgets, homeowners often need to pri-
oritize their projects. Installing hard-
wood floors often provides a high return
on investment, both from a quantitative
(home value) and qualitative (pride in
ownership) standpoint.
No matter what a homeowner chooses
to do during the fall home improvement
season, it will help reduce cabin fever
during the winter months.
Fall: The best season
for home improvement
Wise Furniture Co. was officially
established when Thomas E. (Tom)
Wise purchased the business in
1958 from his employer, Fritz
Rochen, and “re-branded” it The
Wise Furniture Company. Tom and
his wife, Jeanne, provided the
growing families of LeSueur and
surrounding areas with not only
furniture basics but the newest,
most up-to-date furniture fashions
available. Tom and Jeanne were
committed to providing customer
service to each and every cus-
tomer–a tradition which continues
to this day. After Tom’s passing in
1989, Jeanne Wise continued the
Wise Furniture Co. service tradi-
tions.
Mickey Smith joined Wise Furni-
ture Co. after graduation in 1981,
providing delivery and other cus-
tomer services. In 1990, Mickey
moved into sales – making sure
each transaction included cus-
tomer satisfaction before, during
and after the sale. In 2005, he
purchased the business from
Jeanne.
In 2002, Dana Manske joined
the Wise Furniture Company as
Sales Associate. She also assisted
with the management and daily op-
erations and, in 2007, became co-
owner.

Wood’s Edge Alternative Heat-
ing, LLC, in Glencoe provides a
variety of alternative heating
sources for those who want to
get away from traditional natural
gas and propane heating. They
have both indoor and outdoor
stoves that can burn not only
wood, but corn, pellets or coals.
Owners Dan and Cindy Math-
ews advise to plan ahead. As
the cold season arrives, there is
a longer wait on heating stoves.
There is currently limited quan-
tities of the traditional units
available. They say that the En-
vironmental Protection Agency
(EPA) has changed its regula-
tions that went into effect in
May 2015. Units purchased no
later than Dec. 31, 2015, will
be “grandfathered in.”
Wood’s Edge can also service
other brands of stoves. Give
them a call or stop by their lo-
cation west of Glencoe to have a
current stove cleaned and serv-
iced, or check out the units they
have available for sale.
