Tennis nets a victory
The Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ tennis team earned its second win of the year, and first since the opening day of the season, with a 5-2 defeat of Southwest Christian at the Hutchinson Invitational on Friday, Sept. 15.
“It was good to get a win there,” coach Robb DeCorsey said. “Probably could’ve won it 6-1, but it was good for the girls to get a win.”
The Panthers took three of four singles matches, with Justine Helmbrecht winning 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1, Katie Doolittle winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and Krissy Major winning 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4.
“Justine got some revenge on the girl that beat her in sections last year and I was happy for Doolittle to get a win,” DeCorsey said. “Major continues to battle and battle and it was nice for her to taste a win.”
GSL finished off the victory with wins at second and third doubles. Mackenzie Davis and Lily Schmitt (2-6, 7-5, 6-4) rallied for the victory at No. 2, with Kate Lemke and Sacha Willhite (7-6, 2-6, 7-5) gritting out a narrow triumph at No. 3.
