Thalmanns named farm family of year

The Thalmann family of Plato was formally recognized as McLeod County’s Farm Family of the Year by the University of Minnesota at Farmfest on Thursday, Aug. 7.
The honor is given to families who have demonstrated a commitment to enhancing and supporting agriculture and agriculture production.
Thalmann Seeds, located south of Plato, has been a family farm since 1877. For the first 90 years, the farm raised livestock and crops, but in the 1970s the family made a switch by discontinuing livestock and expanding their crop acres. It was at this same time that the Thalmanns began their seed-cleaning business.
Today, Brian Thalmann, along with his youngest son, Adam, and his father, Randall, operate 2,000 acres of land on which they grow commercial corn and soybean seed. With their seed-cleaning facility, Thalmann Seeds cleans and packages soybean seed for Stine Seed Company, located in Iowa, as well as some other grains such as oats and winter wheat.
Thalmann Seeds continues to remain active in the agricultural community by allowing tours of its farm and participating in educational programs.
