Toilet bowl races a Pola-Czesky tradition

Toilet bowl racing, a popular event during Pola-Czesky Days, returns to downtown Silver Lake Friday night, Aug. 2, 7 p.m.

Shortly before 7 p.m. Friday, crowds will gather along Main Street in downtown Silver Lake. They’re anticipating one of the more popular events associated with Pola-Czesky Days Aug. 2-4 in Silver Lake. It’s not the parade or a lip-synch contest but rather clean fun associated closely with Silver Lake.
Try toilet bowl racing.
Toilet bowls mounted on a platform with wheels and powered by the rider wielding a plunger are a popular attraction. The event was started in the late-1960s and ran until the 1980s before fears of racers, traveling too fast and out of control aboard a porcelain throne had Pola-Czesky Days organizers fearing the possible repercussions and liability if someone were hurt in a crash, said Harvey Mikolichek, one of the organizers of the event. Toilet bowl racing came back four years ago when a different, safer, way to race was proposed and accepted.
