Trio of Panthers win individual titles at WCC West title meet

Three members of the Glencoe-Silver Lake track and field teams earned all-conference honors at the Wright County Conference West championship meet on Tuesday, May 15, at New London-Spicer.
Kyle Christensen and Connor Kantack earned the honors for the boys’ team, as well as Zoe Christensen from the girls’ squad.
Kantack claimed the WCC West championship in discus with a toss of 142 feet, 6.5 inches – nearly four full feet further than his nearest competitor. He was also the conference runner-up in shot put with a lob of 49-11 and took fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.88 seconds.
Kyle Christensen took the conference title in the 200-meter dash with a run of 22.53 and took second in the 100-meter dash with a run of 11.43 – falling just four-hundredths of a second short of taking the WCC West crown in both dash events.
Christensen also joined Keaton Goettl, Zach Mohr and William Higgins to finish second in the 4x200-meter relay, with the foursome finishing in a time of 1:36.57.
Zoe Christensen won the WCC West title in the shot put, breaking her own conference record with a heave of 39-09. She finished a full five feet ahead of the second-place finisher. She also finished third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.58 and fourth in the discus with a throw of 104-08.
Olivia Lemke broke her own school record in pole vault, finishing as the conference runner-up in the event with a result of 10-06.
The GSL boys placed second as a team at the WCC West meet, posting 113 points to finish just ahead of third-place Mound Westonka at 111 points. Annandale won the conference boys’ title with 130 points. The Panther girls took third place with 97 points; Rockford won the meet with 168 points and Annandale compiled 110 points.
Rhyan Herrmann placed second in the girls’ 100 in 13.10, with Emily Graupmann third in the 200 at 27.71 and fourth in the 400 at 1:03.77. Herrmann also placed fifth in the 200 in 27.71, as did Mickalyn Frahm in the 100 hurdles in 17.35.
Maddie Lemke placed third in the 3200-meter run in 13:45.29. Kendall Guererro and Malayh Metcalf placed fourth and fifth in the 1600-meter run with respective times of 5:46.11 and 5:49.56.
The GSL 4x200 meter relay quartet of Ellie Sonju, Kaitlyn Popp, Herrmann and Graupmann placed third in 1:52.42, with the 4x100 squad of Julia Nelson, Kaitlyn Popp, Erin Jaskowiak and Paige Litzau taking fourth in 53.49.
For the boys, Jakob Rusten placed third in the 3200 in 10:47.08 and fourth in the 1600 in 4:50.96. Rusten led a triumvirate of Panthers placing third through fifth in the 3200, with Connor Hallaway taking fourth and Paul Sievert fifth in respective times of 11:13.72 and 11:15.76.
Higgins took second in the 300-meter hurdles in 42.02. He also placed directly behind Kantack in the 110 hurdles, finishing fourth in 16.88.
The foursome of AJ Anderson Sanchez, Tony Fischer, Alexis Sanchez and Oscar Pena took fourth in the 4x800-meter relay in 8:40.49 and took fifth in 4x400-meter relay in 3:47.90. Also placing fifth was the 4x100 squad of Adam Trevino, Riley Ruzicka, Mohr and Goettl, which finished the relay in 48.06.
In the field, Wyatt Konen tied for third in pole vault with a final result of 12 feet even. Paul Lemke was sixth in shot put at 44-07, with Dylan Richter taking fifth in discus at 121-07.
GSL hosted the Section 2A, Subsection 8 championship meet on Tuesday, May 22, after the Chronicle went to press.
Qualifying subsectional competitors will advance to the Section 2A title meet at Mankato West High School on Saturday, June 2.
