Two part-time maintenance workers hired in Silver Lake

The Silver Lake City Council had two items on its agenda for the special council meeting called on Monday, Nov. 7.
The first was to approve the hiring of two part-time maintenance employees for the public works department.
Tim Grenke and Jason Eischens will be offered the positions. The main responsibility to start will be the plowing of the city’s sidewalks and parking lots in winter.
The two full-time public works employees are both on extended medical leaves. Once they are back, more training will take place.
The city began looking at hiring a part-time employee prior to the extended medical leaves. Five applications were received and four candidates interviewed.
Employment for the two new hires is pending the passing of a drug test.
The second item on the agenda was to review the bids for asbestos abatement at 121 Main St. W.
At the Oct. 17 regular meeting, the Council reviewed one bid from Brett Madsen Asbestos Abatement of Hutchinson totalling $16,500.
The Council directed City Clerk Kerry Venier to seek additional bids for comparison purposes.
The city received a second bid from EnviroBate of Minneapolis for $8,260.
The contract price includes all labor, materials, equipment, supplies, disposal and insurance necessary for the removal and disposal of asbestos containing materials on the site.
EnviroBate also proposes to complete the work outlined in the contract in accordance with all U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),  Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and state and local regulations governing asbestos control and removal.
