Veterans Day message: ‘They have all served so we can have freedoms’

Glencoe Light & Plant Manager Dave Meyer was guest speaker at the program. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army and Reserves.

When Dave Meyer joined the U.S. Army as a senior in high school, he did it for a lot of reasons — a chance to pay for college, to see the world, and to carry on a family tradition.
“But at some point, serving in the military took on a whole new meaning,” Meyer told the audience at the Glencoe-Silver Lake Veterans Day program Nov. 11. “I don’t know why or what triggered it, but I started standing a little taller and more at attention. And I started taking a longer and more respectful look at veterans.”
Meyer indicated that his experience is probably similar to most veterans.
Earlier in his speech, he had noted that veterans of military service were “men and women who set everything aside to selflessly serve their country. I don’t know why (they chose to serve), or if they had the same reason, but they did make the choice.
“They all sacrificed time with family and friends, and missed events and special occasions. They all sacrificed something without asking for anything in return.”
