Veterans remembered, honored

While it’s wonderful to honor veterans on Veterans Day and offer them respect on a one-to-one basis, there is more to be done.
That was guest speaker Matthew Tiernan’s message to students and community members at the annual Glencoe-Silver Lake Veterans Day program at the high school Friday morning.
Tiernan is a veteran himself and a U.S. Army recruiter based in Mankato.
Tiernan said that veterans have earned every benefit that they receive from their country and community.
“It is their loyalty and great courage that makes us what we are today … and what we have been for over 200 years,” said Tiernan.
“Veterans have served in different places and in different ways, but served they have,” Tiernan continued. “They have served in war, and they have kept the peace.”
Tiernan quoted President Calvin Coolidge as saying, “The nation that forgets its defenders will itself be forgotten.”
Fortunately, Tiernan said, that is not the case in the United States.
“Your presence here today shows that has not happened,” said Tiernan.
Despite that appreciation, Tiernan said there is much more to be done.
