Ways to observe Memorial Day

To the Editor:
Memorial Day is about remembering. This is a day to remember all U.S. military personnel who died in wars or other military actions.
It began as Decoration Day on May 30, 1868. The graves of comrades were decorated and flags were flown at half-staff.
Display the U.S. Flag at your home and on the main streets of your community. Flying our flag is one of the simplest ways to show support for your country and its founding principles and to pay respect to those lives lost. The U.S. Flag is to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to noon. At noon, raise the flag to full staff until sunset.  
Some other ways to observe Memorial Day include:
• Adorning the graves of soldiers with flags or flowers;
• Visiting cemeteries and memorials;
• Furling the POW-MIA Flag; and
• Keep silence for a minute at 3 p.m., “National Moment of Remembrance” and listen to “Taps” being played.
Remember to attend a Memorial Day program on Monday, May 25.
