What’s the big deal about hair?

By Rich Glennie
It may be buried deep in the DNA of men, but there is a tendency to wade into situations that probably should be avoided. This might be one of them. But here goes.
What is the big deal about women’s hair? (Here’s where smart men just duck).
The topic comes up with my wife regularly as we venture out on our morning walks. In the spring, summer and fall, it is concern about the wind and how it messes with her hairdo. In the winter, it is the cold and how having a hat or hood on also messes with her hairdo.
Me? I have no hairdo. I wear a ball cap in the summer, stocking cap in the winter. Pretty simple.
No matter the weather, my wife is not going to wear a hat. That is until the recent cold snap around the Christmas holidays. That was an old-fashioned Minnesota winter cold spell!
Despite the sub-zero temperatures, we continued our daily walks around town. But she refused to wear her hat, instead opting for ear muffs and a mask that went up to her nose.
One frigid morning, she finally got a cold enough noggin to put her hood over her head. But then, her glasses fogged over!
Off came the hood. Then her hair got frosty … literally. There was no artificial coloring in her hair as temps hovered around 10 below, with an even colder windchill. That was natural frost.
The parka hood made her head sweat. Once off, her head was losing heat that melded with the cold air and resulted in frosted hair! I can’t say I’d ever seen that before.
I thought to myself she must be a real “hot head.” Then I made the mistake of verbalizing that. (Time to duck again).
There seems to be something in the female DNA that causes women to want to have the perfect hairdo at all times. Even after walking two miles in the bitter cold with your hood up, it still has to look just right when we walk into Gert & Erma’s for hot drinks and to warm up each winter morning.
“Who you trying to impress?” I asked as we stumble in the door, glasses properly fogged over.
A grunt comes as a reply as she heads to the rest room and a mirror.
“I like that California wind-blown look,” I offered as a compliment as she walks to the rest room. “It makes you look outdoorsy, healthy.”
Another grunt. Apparently she didn’t receive that compliment well either.
Karen often sits with the old guys until the ladies group gathers. Then she abandons us for more interesting conversation. Apparently, hats and hair were topics a while back, and she promptly reported that ALL women are concerned about their hair, regardless of the weather!
So as I continue to stumble through life, it seems I still have a ways to go to understand women.
For most guys, the real miracle is whether we have our sweatshirts on right side out or backwards. Like I say, men are pretty simple.
