Is this what you want? Our view: A new state of ridiculous

A post on The Chronicle’s Facebook page this past week reached a new level of disbelief. Not to be outdone, Republicans in the Minnesota House are challenging its incredulity.
The person stated, “Our governor is a complete idiot! There is a special place in hell for him.”
Gov. Tim Walz extended the stay-at-home order until May 18. Many had hoped the order would be lifted but the ongoing growth in the number of coronavirus cases without widespread testing statewide left Gov. Walz feeling the best interest of Minnesotans – all Minnesotans – was to extend the order.
We have previously espoused caution for loosening restrictions. That will not change. Apparently, the folks posting their objections to ongoing restrictions on Facebook and other forms of social media have access to and a greater level of understanding of scientific and medical knowledge from the Mayo Clinic, the Centers for Disease Control and the U of M than Gov. Walz. If they are worried about their personal businesses surviving, we certainly understand their concerns. Gov. Walz is being cautious, cautious trying to protect the lives of Minnesotans. He is not promoting crackpot ideas. He is not suggesting people inject themselves with unproven chemicals and then claiming it was sarcasm. He has not, to our knowledge, refused to accept responsibility for Minnesota’s response to the pandemic.
The number of COVID-19 cases in the state will continue to go up as more people are tested. There are people out there carrying the virus in an asymptomatic state. Would a stylist want to cut hair uncertain if the client was carrying COVID-19? We think not.
The Minnesota Department of Health reports via its website there were just shy of 7,000 positive COVID-19 tests as of May 3. Two days earlier, there were just less than 6,000 positive tests in the state.
Gov. Walz’s latest executive order extended the stay-at-home measures until May 18. It did allow non-essential businesses to reopen for curbside service, reportedly allowing up to 30,000 people to go back to work. He is trying to balance the needs of the workforce with public health and safety. That’s a claim those who call for throwing the doors to the economy wide open can’t make.
We are relieved opinion polls reportedly show the majority of Minnesotans and Americans support a cautious approach.
It is concerning some members of the Minnesota House, led by Rep. Kurt Daudt, R-Crown, is threatening to use the bonding bill as leverage to force Gov. Walz to reopen the economy. It’s a cheap, shortsighted political election-year ploy. Squelching the bonding bill as a ploy to force Gov. Walz to end the stay-at-home order before he should is destined to hurt businesses that employ people who work on infrastructure projects and communities.
If Rep. Daudt or those of like mind want to accept total authority and total responsibility for peoples’ lives that comes with it, we encourage them to run for governor.
