Willard ‘Bud’ Meier, 96, of Glencoe

Willard “Bud” Meier, 96, of Glencoe, formerly of Plato, died Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at Grand Meadows Senior Living in Glencoe.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, June 15, at the Church of St. Pius X in Glencoe. The Rev. Anthony Stubeda officiated. Sue Mielke was the organist and Shari Templin was the song leader. Musical selections were “Holy God, We Praise Thy Name,” “How Great Thou Art,” “Amazing Grace,” “My Eyes Have Seen the Glory” and “Ave Maria.”
 
Military honors were by Plato American Legion Post 641. Interment was in the church cemetery.
 
Willard Joseph Meier was born April 4, 1919, in Plato, the son of Joseph and Lillian (Niehaus) Meier. He was baptized April 20, 1919, and confirmed in the Catholic faith at Ascension Catholic Church in Norwood. He attended Plato grade school and was a graduate of the Glencoe High School class of 1937.
 
He entered active military service in the U.S. Army Air Corps on Oct. 29, 1942, at Fort Snelling, and served his country during World War II. He received an honorable discharge on Oct. 8, 1945, in Sioux Falls, S.D. Upon his discharge, he returned to Plato and worked as a mechanic for Herb Droege at Plato Garage.
 
On Aug. 28, 1948, he was united in marriage to Virginia Adelmann at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Glencoe. Their marriage was blessed with four children, Greg, Maureen, Gene and Ellen. In 1963, Mr. Meier purchased the business from Herb Droege and ran it until his retirement in 1979.
 
Mr. Meier attended the Church of St. Pius X in Glencoe, where he served as an usher. He was a member of Plato American Legion Post 641 and a longtime volunteer for the Plato Fire Department. He also served on the Plato City Council for 24 years.
In his younger years, he enjoyed playing on the Plato baseball team and eventually became the manager. He and his wife Virginia enjoyed attending baseball games and watching the Minnesota Twins on television. In his spare time, he loved to fish. He cherished spending time with his family, granddaughter and friends.
 
Willard and Virginia Meier resided in Plato until 1990, when they moved to Glencoe. In August 2010, they moved to Grand Meadows Senior Living in Glencoe.
 
He is survived by his children, Greg Meier of Hutchinson, Maureen Meier of Park Ridge, Ill., Gene (Michele) Meier of Mound and Ellen Meier of Golden Valley; granddaughter, Lauren Meier; many other relatives and friends.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Lillian Meier; wife, Virginia Meier; sisters, Eileen Sherritt, Marguerite (Walter) Pinner, Anna (George) Vroman and Marcella (John) Rueber; and brothers-in-law, Richard (Luella) Adelmann and Eugene (Kaye) Adelmann.
