Local growers honor own at annual banquet
Francis Svoboda, left, president of the McLeod County Corn & Soybean Growers Association, surprised emcee Nathan Winter with the 2011 Friend of Agriculture Award Saturday night at the Pla-Mor Ballroom. Winter is a University of Minnesota Extension educator and has emceed the last several association banquets.
The 28th annual banquet of the McLeod County Corn & Soybean Growers Association, also marked the 50th anniversary of the Soybean Growers Association, according to Francis Svoboda, president of the county association.

It also was a time for the local growers to honor some of their own members and activities as well as talk with local ag dealers and suppliers.

Park board recommends new shelter, plus addition
After a two-hour meeting Jan. 25 between Glencoe City Council members and member of city's parks board, the park board decided to concentrate on replacing Oak Leaf Park Shelter No. 2 and put its long-range plans on hold for now.

The joint meeting agenda included not only replacement of the biggest shelter house, but a possible campground master plan at Oak Leaf Park as well as upgrades to the Aquatics Center.

Aquatics Center maintenance issues upcoming
The other major topic of discussion at the joint City Council-park board meeting Jan. 25 involved maintenance work at the 11-year-old Glencoe Aquatics Center in Oak Leaf Park.

McLeod County GOP caucus sites announced
The McLeod County Republican Party announced the sites for its Feb. 7 precinct caucuses. Registration at all the sites will be at 6:30 p.m. and the caucus begins at 7 p.m.

McLeod County Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) precinct caucuses will be held at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 7, at the following locations:

GSL boys notch 1st league win
Mitch Sanchez put up 22 points, including eight in a 15-6 separation surge, and teammate Ethan Maass added 19 tallies, as the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys' basketball team won its first Wright County Conference game of the season, topping Dassel-Cokato, 66-57, Friday (Jan. 27) at home.
Triple 'A' selections serious about school
Caitlin Miller and Levi Davis, this year's Triple "A" students at Glencoe-Silver Lake High School, are fans of the other.

About Miller, Davis says, "She's very hard-working, very outgoing. ... She just gets her work done."
Stifter leads GSL girls to 45-40 win
Senior point guard Jackie Stifter led the way, tallying 11 points to go with six steals, four rebounds and four blocked shots, as Glencoe-Silver Lake downed Dassel-Cokato, 45-40, in last Friday's (Jan. 27) Wright County Conference clash on the Chargers' court.
