| Local student enjoys online learning through Insight Schools
By Lori Copler
Most school days, Sandra Cash of Glencoe sits at home with a laptop computer, using the Internet to obtain her high school education through Insight Schools of Minnesota, an online learning center aligned with the Brooklyn Center School District.
Cash said there is a common misconception that online students spend time alone, reading lectures on their computers and taking online tests.
"I think there is a perception that it's just you, and there is no one helping," Cash said.
Not so, Cash said.
The classes are broadcast live and students use chat rooms to interact with the teacher and each other. In addition, Cash said, teachers are available by phone, instant messaging and e-mail.
Insight students also are assigned a mentor, "who helps us with problems and keeps us on track," Cash said.
Cash spent her elementary years being home schooled by her mother. Looking for high school options, Cash heard about Insight from a friend "and I decided to look into it and try it."
Cash is now in her second year with Insight, currently enrolled as a sophomore.
Along with interacting with teachers and her mentor, Cash said she has "made lots of friends" through the online learning center.
But getting together with those new friends "just to hang" can be difficult, Cash indicated.
"We're from everywhere in Minnesota," she said.
