By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor larissa Ober scored 22 points, hauled down 15 rebounds and blocked five shots in Glencoe-Silver Lake’s basketball assignment at New LondonSpicer last Tuesday — a 73-59 win for NLS, whose Taylor Thunstedt, a junior guard, tallied 50 points. Despite her team’s loss, Ober’s night was something special, too. With her fifth board, the 6-foot-1 senior became GSL’s all-time leader for most rebounds in a career, passing Carolyn Busse’s previous list topper. Busse had 842 in her career; with another 15 in last Friday’s 5336 setback at Orono, Ober has 868. That is with at least 12 games still to play, assuming she stays healthy.

Ober tops GSL list for most career boards

Senior Clarissa Ober now tops GSL’s career leader lists for most rebounds (868) and blocked shots (300). And she’s not through.
“She takes a lot of pride in her rebounding,” says GSL head coach — and dad — Cullen Ober. “The main thing is, she moves. She goes and gets that ball.” Ober will graduate being her school’s all-time leader in rebounds and blocked shots. Currently, she has 300 blocked shots, which are 162 more than anyone else. Wait! There could be more. Ober’s 1,263 career points rank second to Brittany Thiesfeld’s 1,446 on GSL’s list of all-time scoring leaders. If the future South Dakota State University Jackrabbit averages 15.3 points per game in GSL’s next 12 games she will move to the top of the list. She also is sixth on GSL’s all-time steals list, with 203 (leader Busse
graduated with 321), and 10th in made 3-point field goals (Amanda Kinzler’s 315 top that list). Ober has 47. *** GSL’s 10 top rebounders:

Hartwig, Clouse capture crowns
By Kevin Simonson Special to The Chronicle Because of match count issues, the GSL/LP wrestlers were not at full strength when they headed south to Lake Crystal for the inaugural Lake Crystal Welcome Memorial Invitational (LCWM). The Panthers, who have been filling all 14 weights recently, only had 11 competitors for last Saturday’s meet. Missing from the lineup were regulars Jacob Jewett, Aaron Donnay, Brandon Richter, Nate Tesch and Ray Eberhard. Others were missing due to potential 9th-grade section and 9thgrade state meet matches. A wrestler can compete in only 36 matches before the section dual meet tournament. Of the 11 wrestlers competing in the LCWM tourney, seven of them placed with three advancing to the finals. Wrestling in the finals were Michael Donnay (120), Mitchell Hartwig (145) and Dalton Clouse (195). Winning titles were Hartwig and Clouse. The championship match at 145 was a dream matchup between two highly ranked wrestlers. Tanner Trembley from LCWM had not experienced defeat since he lost two matches in Glencoe on Dec. 15, 2011. His two losses that night were to Mitchell Hartwig from GSL/LP, 8-5, and Sam Brancale from Eden Prairie, 5-3. Brancale ended up winning the AAA state title at 126 while Trembley went on to win the Class A 132pound state title. This championship match was 0-0 after one period with Trembley winning the flip for choice in the second. He chose the down position and is known for being a scrambler. But Hartwig was able to put him on his back for a two-point nearfall. After injury time, Trembley earned an escape, but Hartwig quickly scored a takedown to lead 4-1 going into the third period. Hartwig was given an escape late in the third to win this classic match 5-1. Hartwig advanced to the finals with a pin in the quarterfinals and a 4-0 de-

youths who have been stricken by a medical hardship. This year’s recipients are as follows: • Mason Brink, age 10 of Hutchinson. Mason deals with a neuro-genetic disorder known as Angelman syndrome. • McKenzie Fairbairn, 5 of Glencoe. Epilepsy. • Sara Gomez, 14 of Litchfield.
Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). • Philip Gonzalez, 13 of Edina. Muscle-eye-brain disease (MEB). • Tate Maurer, 12 of Waconia. Stage III of Burkitt’s syndrome. • Luke Schumacher, 6 of Minnetonka. Panthers drop 3 in a row; now 8-7
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor After winning the championship game of their booster club’s holiday tournament, the GSL Panthers stood 6-2 for the 2012 part of their schedule. Robb DeCorsey’s boys were 50 on their home court. But so far, things have not gone as well in 2013. Last Tuesday at home, the Panthers dropped a Wright County Conference tussle with New London-Spicer. The Wildcats, trailing 63-55, scored the game’s last 10 points to pull out a 65-63 victory. Facing another WCC foe last Friday at home, the Panthers fell to Orono, 79-64. The following night, GSL lost 67-64 in overtime at Faribault of the Big Nine Conference. Suddenly, GSL is 8-7 overall, with a 6-3 record at home and a 1-4 mark in their league — its December wins over Hutchinson and Holy Family Catholic not counting in the WCC race. For the most part, the Panthers are playing “extremely hard,” DeCorsey said. But there have been lapses in focus and concentration that need to be fixed. “We need to get together,” he said. — Senior guard Ethan Maass scored the 1,000th point of his GSL career last Tuesday against NLS. — The Panthers are on the road this week for league games at Litchfield (Jan. 22) and at Hutchinson on Friday evening. Their next home game is Feb. 1 against HFC.

Jan. 24, 1963 Charles H. Warner, Editor With Minnesota in the grips of a cold wave that rivals the famous 1936 freezer, social activity in the community has slowed to a virtual halt. Instead of the 100 to 125 social items, the Bulletin’s “local” page is down to about 50 items. Early Wednesday morning, the temperature got down to about 28 degrees below zero at Minneapolis and prospects are that Minnesota weather is going to break an all-time record for hours of zero or below temperatures. Jan. 26, 1978 Kermit T. Hubin, Editor A Sunday afternoon of snowmobiling fun was abruptly halted about 4:30 p.m. when one of the riders was injured. The accident happened near the Maynard Stockmann farm, south of Stewart. Injured in the mishap was James Stockmann of rural Stewart, who was riding a large inner tube being pulled by a snowmobile being driven by Bryan Voelker. The inner tube struck a utility pole, throwing Stockmann against the pole and injuring him. The Buffalo Lake Ambulance took Mr. Stockmann to the Hutchinson hospital, where it was revealed that he had broken the pelvic bones in his hip. He was placed in traction, and transferred Monday evening to Metropolitan Hospital in Minneapolis for further treatment. The Stewart Fire Department answered a call to the David Greiner home, about three miles south of Stewart, at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. A faulty carburetor in the oil heater caused the fire that spread to the kitchen floor. Greiner attempted to control the fire while his wife ran to Busslers to call the fire department. There was no serious damage. Firemen were on the scene about an hour.
Catholic United Financial’s schools raffle begins
Ticket sales for the Catholic United Financial 2013 Catholic Schools Raffle, which provides Catholic schools the chance to raise money and keep 100 percent of the revenue, will run from Friday, Jan. 18, through March 1. Students and families from participating schools in Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota will sell raffle tickets. The schools will use the proceeds for everything from school supplies to computers to field trips and more. This year’s raffle will include 83 schools and more than 17,000 participating students. The tickets give buyers a chance at more than $55,000 in raffle prizes, all provided at no cost to the schools by Catholic United Financial. Included are a 2013 Ford Escape SUV or $25,000, 2014 Super Bowl tickets, a Caribbean cruise vacation, Minnesota Twins suite tickets (donated by Hubbard Radio), iPads, digital cameras, Kindle Fire tablets, gift cards and more. (See official rules atwww.catholicunited.org/lin ks/raffle.) The prize drawing ceremony on March 14 will be broadcast live on Catholic United’s website beginning at 11 a.m. Catholic United announced a $750,000 goal for 2013, and schools have responded enthusiastically to the challenge. Since Catholic United pays all expenses, schools get to keep every cent of each ticket sold. The raffle has raised more than $1 million for Catholic schools since 2009.
