Meet 4 of the Orth kids, class of ’13
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor he Tim Orth Memorial Foundation’s 15th-annual basketball benefit in Glencoe takes place Saturday evening, April 6, at the GSL High School gymnasium. As in past years, volunteer officials are preparing an energetic lineup of entertainment, aimed at creating a community spirit of love, caring and giving. Proceeds — raised through admissions, concessions, donations, raffles and a silent auction — will be shared among nine area youths, each of whom tells his or her own health-related story. Mason Brink, age 10 of Hutchinson, battles Angelman syndrome; McKenzie Fairbairn, 5, rural Glencoe, deals with epilepsy, and Sara Gomez, 14, Litchfield, has leukemia. Philip Gonzales, 13, Edina, lives with a rare type of muscular dystrophy; Tate Maurer, 12, Waconia, fights a stage of Burkitt’s lymphoma, and Tianna Schilling, 10, rural Maple Plain, has a cancerous brain tumor. Luke Schumacher, 6, Minnetonka, also has a brain tumor; Levi Silfverston, 6, Brownton, deals with congenital heart disease, and Kailyn Wester, 21 months, lives with a rare condition that affects heart, hearing, vision and teeth. The Chronicle presents four of the stories about class of 2013 Orth kids this week, with the others to follow in upcoming weeks.

2013 Tim Orth Memorial Foundation recipient Mason Brink shares a good moment with his mother, Sara Schwarzrock, recently. The 10-
year-old Hutchinson boy has lived his entire life with the genetic disorder known as Angelman’s syndrome.
Wester Kailyn Kailyn Wester was a new arrival
for June 2, 2011. By then, doctors already knew about the cataracts in each eye and the hole in her heart. The cataracts were removed in the first couple of months. The heart will be repaired later — in a year, or at
most two. But other issues have popped up, too, including glaucoma in her left eye. Kailyn is diagnosed with a rare condition known as oculofaciocardiodental syndrome, or OFCD. She wears glasses over her eyes, tubes in her ears and braces for her feet. And she smiles a lot! Her mother, Julie, expects Kailyn to live a long and “pretty normal” life. Julie, currently 33 years young, believes she has always had OFCD herself, although she never was diagnosed. Like her youngest daughter, she was born with cataracts and a hole in her heart. Older sister Madison, 6, has no signs of OFCD, and never has, according to her mom. But she rates at the top of Kailyn’s list of favorite people. When Julie and Kailyn step outside and set out for the bus stop to meet Madison after a day at school, Kailyn often laughs out loud in gleeful anticipation. *** — When everyone is home, Kailyn’s family also includes her dad, Simeon, as well as the Westers’ cat, Pepe. — Kailyn and her mom visit the Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) building once a week. Mason Brink has ‘come a long way’ since diagnosis
Hutchinson boy lives with Angelman syndrome
By Alyssa Schauer Staff Writer Like most 10-year-old boys, Mason Brink enjoys swimming, jumping on trampolines, playing on his iPad, and goofing around with his brothers and sisters. But unlike most children his age, Mason suffers from Angelman syndrome (AS), a genetic disorder caused by partial deletion of the 15th chromosome. AS is characterized by developmental delay and intellectual disability. Also, it affects motor skills and balance. “When he was born, I knew something wasn’t quite right. He is a twin actually. His sister, Madison, was born first, and four minutes later, I had Mason,” his mother, Sara Schwarzrock, said. “Of course having twins, it was a tough labor,” she laughed. Schwarzrock added that Mason was a breached baby, and that in his infancy, he had a lot of feeding issues. “At first I thought Mason was autistic. He wasn’t interacting quite like his twin sister, and he was very unstable,” she said. She added that the doctors thought he had cerebral palsy. “AS commonly is misdiagnosed as cerebral palsy, but his MRIs came back clear. We had a lot of public health nurses and early childhood specialists in and out of the house. It was a constant battle with doctors. A lot of trial and error, but at 18 months, he was diagnosed with AS,” Schwarz-rock said. In Mason’s younger years, he experienced about 90 seizures a day, and was in and out of doctor’s offices five to six days a week. “He had a lot of therapies. I was always running him to appointments, and let me tell you, he does not like going to see doctors,” Schwarzrock laughed. She said Mason “freezes up” and “battles” when it comes to blood work and other check-ups. “Sometimes it takes four of us to calm him down just to have shots taken. It gets pretty exhausting,” she said. “But we have come a long way since his diagnosis. We are seeing constant improvement in Mason. He maybe has a seizure once to twice a year, and he will be going into the sixth grade next fall,” Schwarzrock said. She added that he “loves school,” but that the transition into the middle school will be “difficult.” “We have been very lucky to have great staff and support at Park Elementary, and I made sure that he has the chance to connect and work with his paras before school starts next year,” Schwarzrock said. She said school transitions are always hard on Mason. “He has a tendency to throw up whenever he doesn’t like something. And usually on the first day of school, we’ll get a call that he’s sick. He’s smart. He knows if he throws up, he’ll get sent home, but we’ve caught on,” she laughed. Though Mason is improving, he still sees therapists and doctors about three times a week. “We are very excited that Mason is an Orth recipient. (Benefit volunteer) Ralph Johnson actually called us a couple months ago and asked us if we’d be interested in applying. I am so thankful for his call,” Schwarzrock said. She said that being an Orth recipi-

Glencoe native Paul Gebhardt, now 56, placed 16th at this year’s Iditarod sled-dog race. Gebhardt, who has finished as high as second place in past Iditarods, completed his 2013 run from Anchorage to Nome in 9 days, 19 hours, 9 minutes, 32 seconds. Champion Mitch Seavey, who is 53, reached Nome in 9 days, 7 hours, 39 minutes, 56 seconds.
Clarissa averaged a double-double
GSL head coach Cullen Ober has released final statistics on his 201213 girls’ basketball individuals, and not surprisingly, senior Clarissa Ober tops lists in several categories. Ober was the Panthers’ leading scorer, averaging 16.3 points per game on 54.3-percent shooting from the floor and 70.3-percent from the
line. She also averaged 12.1 rebounds, 3.8 blocked shots, 2.4 steals and 2.2 assists a game, Listed by their scoring averages, junior forward Stephanie Klockmann averaged 10.4 points (43.6 fg%, 48.1 ft%), 8.3 rebounds and 3.2 assusts; eighth-grader guard Maddie Monahan, 7.5 points (51.1 3-fg%, 68.7 ft%) and 4.0 assists; and junior guard Samantha Lange, 6.3 points (52.9 ft%) and 1.5 assists.
3 WCC teams advance to state
Annandale and Litchfield are playing in this week’s state Class AA boys’ basketball tournament, while Delano is a participant in the state Class AAA event, giving Wright County Conference fans three teams to cheer for. Waconia and Holy Family lost games in the section finals.

ent will help with costs not covered by insurance. “Believe it or not, we go through so many clothes with Mason. He likes to roughhouse with his brothers and sisters, and he is pretty active. He wears through a lot of clothes, not to mention, there was a period of years when I couldn’t have anything hanging on the walls because he would knock things down,” Schwarzrock said. She added that she is also looking forward to being able to purchase a motorized tandem bike for Mason. “The bike has an electric motor, since Mason can’t really pedal yet, but it will help him learn. And I really want to participate in local 5K races with him and get him outside more,” she added. Sara, and her husband, Ben, have four other children: Kassie, 18, Cody, 16, Madison (Mason’s twin sister), 10, and Dylan, 7. “We are so, so blessed and thankful for this opportunity with the Orth Foundation. We can’t wait to attend the event and be able to help Mason,” Schwarzrock said.

Philip Gonzales
Philip Gonzales lives with a “very, very rare” type of muscular dystrophy, caused by Muscle-Eye-Brain disease, or MEB, his dad with the same name says. Due to MEB, young Philip, 13, does not eat solids, but rather is fed through a tube; he and his wheelchair need to be lifted on and off the school bus he rides to and from South View Middle School in Edina each day; and he has become blind. But do not be discouraged! Philip wants no part of that. “He’s a real people person,” says his dad. “He gets along with just about everybody.” As for school, he loves it. “It’s his favorite thing,” Dad Gonzales says, His son likes music a lot, particularly Bach and other classics. But he performs best with his blues harmonica. “He loves to perform,” dad says, “and he loves to hear people applaud him.” His “stuff” for making music also includes guitar, keyboard and drums machine. “He loves life,” dad says. *** — Young Philip’s family support also includes his mom, April Olson, and an older sister, Alanna, 21. — Dad says Philip loves to go to church at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis, delighting in particular over the music. — “Our hopes are day by day,” the older Gonzales says, pointing out the strength prayer has provided. The family looks forward to the Tim Orth Foundation benefit. “We’re so glad to be part of that,” he says.

The 1st Lutheran boys’ basketball team from Glencoe placed third in a grades 5-6 tournament March 16 at Trinity Lutheran School in Waconia. Team members, from left, are: front row, Kobe Boozikee, Jacob Harpel, Austin Exsted, Cole Ehrke; back row, assistant coach Kraig Terlinden, Spencer Lilienthal, Tayler Terlinden, Blake Mickolicek, Korey Johnson, Ty Christensen, and head coach Chad Christensen.

Tianna Schilling
Tianna Schilling likes the outdoors. Swimming is a passion. Same with bicycling. For this 10-year-old rural Maple Plain girl, it does not get much better than getting together for a week in July with her cousins of the same age, and other family, at a cabin near Chippewa Falls, Wis. But recently, Tianna has not enjoyed the outdoors like she once did. She has had neither the strength nor the stamina. It was in October 2011 that a brain tumor, later found to be cancerous, was removed from her. As a result, Tianna and her mom, Wendy Schilling, spent 8 weeks in Chicago together, allowing the girl to receive proton radiation treatments at the ProCure proton therapy center in Warrenville, Ill. After returning home, Tianna began a year of chemotherapy treatments, which were completed in January 2013. Except for the time in Chicago, Tianna has not missed a lot of school. That is probably due in large part to Wendy being her fourth-grade teacher at Christ Community Lutheran School of Watertown. While Tianna has yet to recapture her old energy, she appears headed in that direction. Wendy hopes most of Tianna’s “ordeal” is done, noting the optimism family members now share for July 2013 near Chippewa Falls. *** — Steve and Wendy Schilling adopted Tianna when the girl was 2. Tianna has two older siblings, Megan, 19, and Zach, 17. — Wendy says the family’s faith has helped them along — as has a “huge support system.” — The Schillings will miss the Orth event in Glencoe. Instead, they will be in Hawaii, thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Trailblazer makes mid-year salary adjustment in hopes of attracting more applicants
By Lori Copler Staff Writer Hoping to draw more applicants for open jobs, the Trailblazer Transit Joint Powers Board on Thursday morning raised the base pay for its driver and dispatcher positions. The minimum driver pay was raised to $15 an hour from $13.85 per hour; and the minimum dispatcher pay was raised to $15.25 per hour from $14.31 per hour. Those drivers and dispatchers who have not reached the new base wages through longevity will be brought up to the new minimum, plus get an additional 10 cents per hour for each year they have been with Trailblazer. As an example, a driver who has four years of employment with Trailblazer will receive $15.40 per hour. The Joint Powers Board had a meeting earlier this month to try to address the issue, but failed to come to a consensus on what should be done. Sibley County Commissioner Bill Pinske, who chairs the Trailblazer board, did some investigating into what Sibley and McLeod counties pay their highway department truck drivers. Sibley County has been offering drivers about $15.36 per hour as a starting wage and McLeod County has been offering about $15.18 an hour, although their low range of their salary schedules is lower than that. “I think we were all thinking in that $15 an hour range,” said Pinske. But the problem was that there could be drivers with five years of experience who could be making less than a new driver, which is why Pinske proposed the 10-cents an hour per year of service differential. “The issue is, according to Gary (Trailblazer director Gary Ludwig) that he’s not getting the drivers at $13.85,” said Pinske. Ludwig said that in the early years of Trailblazer, he had the option of offering more than the minimum of the salary range for a particular job if it was necessary to attract good people because of the job market. That is no longer the case, he said, which is why the matter came before the Joint Powers Board. Pinske said the new salaries will not apply to positions other than drivers or dispatchers, such as the executive director, operations manager, officer manager, driver and fleet manager, lead driver or facility maintenance. “We’re leaving management out of this for now,” said Pinske. “That can be a budget item for next year.” The increases in the minimum salary ranges were approved by the Joint Powers Board, effective April 1. The increase in salaries will cost Trailblazer about $44,600 for the remainder of 2013, and about $59,500 in 2014. McLeod County Commissioner Ron Shimanski asked Ludwig if he feels that the increase will help in filling open positions. “I think we’ll draw a better pool of applicants,” said Ludwig. “We’ll make headway, but we won’t really know until the applications come in.”

Class rooms vacated at those sites will become available for K-6 populations. Construction of the early childhood learning center allows synergy between the district’s programs for early learners, will provide access to gymnasium space not available to early learners at other sites, and will provide safe access for children and parents. The district will fund the costs of construction through the lease-purchase provisions of Minn. Stat. §126C.40 and school district general funds. Remodeling of adjacent space will be funded by school district general funds. The cost of the project is estimated at $1,500,000. The district will execute a 10-year lease purchase agreement of $1 million with annual lease payments funded by proceeds of an annual lease levy. The remainder of the funds will be provided from the district’s general fund balance which is greater than school board policy targets. The school board believes that this project is in the best long-term interest of the district. REVIEW AND COMMENT STATEMENT Based upon the department’s analysis of the school district’s required documentation and other pertinent information from sources of the Department of Education, the Commissioner of Education judges the proposed construction to be educationally and economically advisable. Townships set levies, some hold elections
By Lori Copler Staff Writer Acoma — Acoma set its 2014 levy at $258,000, and discussed ways to pay its share of a new fire truck being purchased by the Hutchinson Fire Department. Bergen — The 2014 levy was set at $30,000 for the general fund, $130,000 for the road and bridge fund (a $10,000 decrease from last year), and $25,000 for fire protection (a $5,000) decrease from last year). A committee is being formed to explore options for housing the township maintenance equipment in the future. If any township residents are interested in being a part of this committee, he or she should contact a township supervisor. Collins — Jim Friedrichs was re-elected to a three-year term with 18 votes; Pete Maiers was elected to a twoyear supervisor term with 21 votes (Randy Krippner received a write-in vote), and Daniel Benson was re-elected treasurer to a two-year term with 19 votes. There was a total of 23 voters. The levy was set at $107,000, an increase of $4,000. Brownton Fire Chief Chris Hansch gave a review of the department. Supervisors Friedrichs, Jay Reiner and Maiers reviewed the Hutchinson and Stewart fire protection services, and there was some discussion of a possible new fire protection contract with Stewart. The county commissioner was not present, but there was some discussion of road maintenance, according to Clerk Al Fredrickson, including possible sharing of dust control costs. Glencoe — Board Chair Jim Hueser reported that the possible purchase of a new fire truck for the Glencoe Fire Department was discussed, and the levy was increased by $10,000 because of bridge repairs. Hale — Roger Pokornowski was re-elected to a threeyear term as a supervisor with 10 votes (there was one write-in), and Treasurer Colleen Kaczmarek was reelected to a two-year term with 11 votes. The levy will remain the same as the prior year, at $80,000 for the road and bridge fund and $85,000 for revenue. Hassan Valley — Steve Reiner was re-elected to a three-year term as a supervisor with 22 votes, with Lowell Baumetz receiving one write-in vote. Joan Harren was re-elected treasurer for a two-year term with 23 votes. There were 23 voters, according to Clerk Bob Anderson. The levy will remain the same at $150,000, with the general fund getting $22,000 of that amount, road and bridge, $108,000, and fire protection, $20,000. Both the Hutchinson and Glencoe fire departments are planning to buy a new truck within the next year or two, said Anderson. Helen — Helen Township did not have elections, but set its levy at $190,000, with $19,000 for the general fund, $104,500 for road and bridge, and $66,500 for fire protection. Lynn — Incumbent Supervisor Corey Henke was reelected to a three-year term and incumbent Treasurer Bernice Baumetz was re-elected for a two year term. The levy was set at a total of $138,000, with $25,000 dedicated to the general fund, $70,000 to the road and bridge fund, $23,000 for fire protection and $20,000 for savings. Clerk Cheryl Bleil said the levy was increased slightly because of the potential purchase of a fire department truck and two new box culverts. Penn — Both incumbents, Wilbert Hahn as a supervisor and Veryl Becker as the treasurer, were re-elected to new terms with 11 votes each. Both the New Auburn and Brownton fire chiefs gave presentations, with New Auburn reportedly seeking to buy a new or used pumper in 2015 and Brownton investigating the possiblity of replacing either its rescue van or a pumper within the next few years. The citizens at the meeting voted to increase the levy to $110,000 from $96,000 because of the potential fire truck purchases and the expected increase in cost for the Leaf Avenue bridge replacement, according to Clerk Don Albrecht. Round Grove — Darwin Wagner and Leroy Hedtke received 18 votes each to be reelected as a supervisor and the treasurer, respectively. The levy will remain the same at $95,000, according to Clerk Deb Zellmann. Sumter — Not available. Winsted — Winsted kept its levy the same as last year at a total of $207,000, according to Clerk Susan Goebel.
