Panther offense is heating up behind a stingy defense
By Josh Randt Sports Editor The Glencoe-Silver Lake baseball team has now won five straight games after losing 16-0 against Holy Family more than a week ago. The bats woke up and so has the Panther defense, allowing three or fewer runs in all five games while scoring 33 in the same span. The Panthers are 5-1 overall, and 3-0 in the West division of the Wright County Conference. ble and a walk, two bases stolen and two runs scored. Junior Josh Schmidt was having his way on the mound for GSL, despite a first-inning passed ball, which resulted in Cameron Klehr scoring the Tigers’ lone run. GSL went up 2-1 in the second, and 4-1 in the third after Dunbar batted in Maass and Colton Lueders with a single to shallow center. Belle Plaine would not reach second base again until the third inning, and third base until the top of the sixth, when Schmidt was replaced by Levi Vorlicek. In 5-1/3 innings pitched, Schmidt faced 20 batters, walked three, and struck out as many while only giving up three hits and one run. Vorlicek wasted no time getting to work when he entered in the sixth with two men on, throwing six straight strikes to quell the Tiger threat. He retired Belle Plaine in the seventh one, two, three and earned the save and Schmidt the win.

In the first game of a doubleheader with Dassel-Cokato, GSL jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Teddy Petersen and Maass both got on base and scored for the Panthers in the first. Nolan Lepel had a big day at the plate for GSL, going two-for-three with a single and an RBI double in the sixth while also earning a walk. It was 6-0 before the Chargers scored their lone run in the top of the sixth. DC had a hard time with Maass hurling strikes on the mound. Maass pitched seven innings against 28 batters while striking out 12, walking two, giving up six hits and only one earned run.

Down one run in the first inning with two outs, Ethan Maass took a suicide lead from third base and looked at Belle Plaine’s Gavin Dauwalter as if to say, “Come get me. I dare you.” While Dauwalters didn’t seem to be in a daring mood, Maass was. He stole home on the second pitch to Reed Dunbar, tying the game at 1-1. The Panthers fed off the senior’s gutsy move, and won the game 4-1 on April 30. Maass’ at bats and base running reeked of senior leadership; going two for three at the plate with a single, a dou-

Stuck in last place
By Josh Randt Sports Editor Last-place finishes are rarely satisfying. Multiple-last place finishes can be disheartening and cause a team to give up. The Panthers boys’ golf team continues to compete against opponents, and themselves, despite four straight finishes at the bottom of the barrel. Finishing in last place at a conference meet usually doesn’t have too many up sides, but when your best golfer from the previous season bounces back after a 106 performance, you take what you can get. Despite shooting a 192 at the event in Annandale, a silver lining resides within the team’s last-place performance: Lou Iacona shot a 43 on the nine-hole course, the team’s best score. Though it wasn’t as good as the 33 from Waconia’s Matt Rachey, it’s promising considering that Iacona shot a 106 at an 18-hole event in New Ulm less than a week ago. “I asked him what happened, and he just said he got a case of the shanks,” Chad Koenen, boys head golf coach, said. Also promising was Tate Lilienthal’s 47, and Joe Fehrenbach’s 49. “Those two have been very consistent so far this year,” Koenen said of his number two and three golfers. “Consis-

Softball girls just can’t catch a break
By Josh Randt Sports Editor The Glencoe-Silver Lake varsity softball team is trying to make do with what they have — a lot of young, inexperienced players. Despite of this, the Panthers’ head coach, Steve Davis, feels his team is doing quite well considering the lack of experience and grueling schedule it’s facing. But it was freshman Moriah Maunu who took the mound for the Panthers in the fourth when Lemke’s leg would not allow her to continue. Maunu pitched four innings in her first varsity game, and mirrored Lemke’s performance on the mound, giving up seven hits and three earned runs while facing 15 batters. She struck out two and walked three. GSL scored again in the bottom of the sixth. By then, the Chargers had already earned the six runs that would get them the victory, 6-2.

By Josh Randt Sports Editor The GSL track and field teams hosted their “home” meet last week in Belle Plaine. With the track out of commission at Steven’s Seminary Stadium, the nearest available venue for the event was in Belle Plaine. The boys earned a second place finish with 138.5 points, 51 points behind Willmar. The girls finished with 73.5 points and a fifth-place finish. Willmar won both the boys and girls events. Senior Ryan Kuester made his return in the 100-meter dash after being sidelined with an injury. Kuester won the event, edging out Willmar’s Chris Cunningham by five hundreths of a second with a 10.81. Greg Ober scored another 10 points for the boys with a 51.75 first place finish in the 400-meter dash. Brandon Richter scored points in the distance events, finishing third in the 800-meter run (2:11.65) and 1600-meter run (4:49.63), while Dalton Clouse shored things up in the hurdles. Clouse placed second in the 110meter hurdles (16.28), and third in the 300-meter hurdles (44.67), producing 14 points in his two events. In the field, Tanner Konen continues to soar above his competition in the pole vault, taking first with an 11-6. Trent Draeger added another 14 points, taking third in the long jump (199) and second in the triple jump (40-3.5). Kelly Arnold found some competition in the 100-meter dash against Willmar’s Rose Jackson. Arnold came in second with 12.87, edged out by Jackson’s 12.17. Arnold would also take third in the 200-meter dash, with Shelby Clouse and Taylor Novak, also of GSL, right behind her, combining for 15 points in the event. 4 runs in the 8th put Brewers away
By Josh Randt Sports Editor It was a beautiful day for town-team baseball on Sunday in Hamburg as the Brewers squared off against the Hawks in the second game of the season for both teams. Each team entered the game with an 0-1 record, and were looking for the first win of the season. John Thell got the nod as the starting pitcher for the Brewers and was off to a no-hitter until the third inning. Thell walked Hamburg’s Kevin Gurule and Kyle Evenski to start the inning. A passed ball while pitching to Alex Kroells allowed the base runners to advance to scoring position. Kroells hit a single to center, driving in Gurule. The Brewers would turn a 4-63 double-play to gain two outs, but allowed a run to score. Eric Crane singled to shallow right and scored two batters later on a Brian Crane single to the same spot, making it 3-0 before the Brewers would get out of the inning. Two more Hamburg runs came in the fifth before the Brewers would create some offense of their own in the sixth. Tony Paggen walked to start off the batting order, and would steal his way to second before being batted in by Josh Kraby’s double to left that approached the warning track. Co-manager Stephen Wiblemo reached on a shorstop error, which moved Kraby over to third. Mike Lien sent Darran Greene’s fifth pitch to shallow left for an RBI single before Parker Kerslake notched his own RBI single, making it 5-3. The Brewers wouldn’t cross home plate again for the rest of the game, as Hamburg’s Mike Mueller took over on the mound in the seventh. Mueller faced 10 batters, walked one and struck out two while making the Brewers flyout for the majority of his outs (six out of nine outs came from pop ups or fly outs). The Hawks turned it on again in the eighth, scoring four more runs, on two hits and three walks, to ensure the victory. “It’s tough to win when you give them six outs,” co-manager Matt Godel said about the fourrun eighth inning. “If we make a couple of plays, it’s still 5-3 and we’re in this thing.” “I thought we played well until we blew it in the eighth,” Wiblemo said. “We came back in the sixth with some offense but we couldn’t sustain it. It’s a long season. All we need is a couple good hops and it’ll turn around. We’ve got a lot of inexperienced guys, and consistency is hard to get when you’re young.”

too many defensive mistakes to be able to win the game. “She (Maunu) stepped in and did a nice job,” Davis said. “But we didn’t make plays for her on defense.” DC jumped out to a four-run lead by the time the Panthers scored their first of four runs in the fourth inning. Piper Davis, Maunu, Becca Green and Laura Becker all hit singles, one after another, in the fourth to spark a rally that tied it at 4-4. But DC would take a onerun lead before the inning was over. Two errors, four hits and a walk had the Panthers playing from behind from the get-go. Rachel Rusten scored in the third, and again in the fifth, with Josie Schmitt and Davis capping off the scoring for the Panthers. One highlight in the field for GSL was Green’s pitching performance. Green started on the mound in the third and didn’t allow a run until the seventh, giving up four hits to 20 batters. Mound-Westonka’s Brooklyn Pouti scored after reaching base by way of a walk, and crossed home on a wild pitch two batters later. Davis reached first in the second inning for GSL with a single and moved into scoring position when Schmitt moved her over with her own single. But it was all for naught, as Green, Becker and Lepel each went down swinging, cutting the threat off at the knees. Allie Brady made it 2-0 for the White Hawks in the third when they reached base on a single, a hit batter and a double. Davis tried to spark a seventhinning rally, leading off with a single, but the White Hawk defense and pitching proved to be too much and closed the game with three straight outs, making it a 2-0 White Hawk victory.

Girls have been playing together, and it shows
By Josh Randt Sports Editor Even with a second-to-last place finish at the Annandale scramble last week, the Panther girls’ golf team is starting to turn into a tight-knit group on the course. Ashlyn Ratike and Claire Wraspir shot a 48. Allie Eischens and Lizzy Gran were two strokes behind with a 50, while Lindsay Wedin and Jenna Lockensgard were two strokes behind them with a 52. *** Last week in Litchfield ,Glencoe-Silver Lake tied for ninth with Delano, out of 11 teams, with a 217. But the girls’ individual scores were quite close to one another, showing promise for upcoming events. Alexis Kerslake was the top Panther golfer, shooting a 52 and finishing the WCC meet in 20th place. Ratike shot a 54 and bounced back from a 64stroke performance on the back nine at Hutchinson. Wraspir and Gran trailed closely behind with 55 and 56 stroke performances, respectively. Wedin turned in a 59 while Eischens shot a 66. *** GSL hosted its WCC meet on the cold and windy afternoon of May 2. The girls were happy to play on their home course after a day of rest when their WCC meet on Wednesday at the Baker School of Golf was postponed until May 15. “I was kind of glad when the meet got postponed yesterday,” Gran said. “I was starting to get a little tired.” Rightfully so. The girls were scheduled to have four meets back-to-back this week until the postponement. The meet counted as two nine-hole events, and served as the first practice on the girls’ home course thus far. “We have gone from winter weather to our meet schedule without a practice on the golf course,” head coach Scott Eckhoff said. “Today should be our first practice on the golf course. I know each of the girls is looking forward to improving their game with a few good practices before we continue our busy schedule next week.” The Panthers took eighth place outright on the front nine with a 215, and tied for the same position with Mound on the back nine at 223. Kerslake turned in the top team score for both events with a 53 on the front and 52 on the back. Wraspir earned the secondbest scores on the day, finishing the front nine with 54 strokes, and the back with 56. Gran tied Kerslake on the front, but turned in a 60 on the latter half of the course. Ratike started out fine with a 55, but ran into trouble during the second event, shooting a 75. Wedin was consistent throughout the day, posting 56 strokes to close out the first event while closing out the back half with one more stroke at 57. Eischens had a less-than stellar performance shooting a 64 during the first event. She would come back and shoot a 58 to cap off her day. GSL is currently ranked seventh in the WCC out of 11 schools. Kerslake is the top-rated golfer for the team, ranked 29th in the conference.

A big fourth inning at the plate by Derek Bratsch all but sealed the deal for the Panthers. Bratsch hit a double to left-center to lead off the inning and scored two batters later on a passed ball. GSL made it all the way through the batting order in the fourth. During his second at-bat of the inning, Bratsch hit a single that mirrored his previous double, and drove in Dunbar and Ebert for an 8-0 lead.
