The Glencoe-Silver Lake baseball
team advanced to the section tourna-
ment by defeating the Sibley East
Wolverines 2-0 on Saturday, May 25.
“That’s exactly how I thought it
would play out,” head coach Dean
Schwirtz said of the close game against
the Wolverines.
GSL 2, Sibley East 0
Ethan Maass pitched a terrific game
for the Panthers, only allowing one hit
while striking out 15.
The Panthers threatened in the first
inning with Ethan Maass singling and
Nolan Lepel taking a pitch to the body.
The two were left on base as the in-
ning ended.
Sibley East never put a runner on
base until the fourth inning with Maass
heaving strikes on the mound for GSL.
Austin Brockoff singled and stole
second base to start of the top of the
fourth for the Wolverines. But Maass
struck out the next three batters, leaving
Brockoff stranded.
In the bottom of the fifth inning,
Carter Pinske walked to lead off, and
reached second two batters later on a
bunt for a hit by Brody Bratsch.
Pinske scored on a trick play when
the Panthers baited Brody Rodning into
attempting a pick-off at second. The
ball got past the shortstop and Pinske
scored to take a 1-0 lead.
Bratsch scored three batters later as
Lepel hit a liner down the left field line
for an RBI single, and the final run in
the 2-0 GSL victory.
Maass pitched seven innings, faced
22 batters, gave up one hit, no walks
and struck out 15.
“He’s clutch, he’s the guy you want
up with runners looking to score,”
Schwirtz said of Lepel.

Royals on Thursday, May 23, in a
makeup game from Tuesday, May 21.
The Panthers came away with a 10-7
victory, but allowed the most runs since
their opening season matchup with
Holy Family.
Nick Tschida scored with two outs in
the top of the first for the Royals to take
a 1-0 lead.
Teddy Petersen took a pitch to the
body to lead off for GSL. He moved
over to third on Lepel’s ground out to
the third basemen, and scored one bat-
ter later as Dunbar singled to right field
for an RBI.
Dunbar stole second and reached
third when Brandon Ebert hit a single
back at the pitcher.
Both Dunbar and Ebert scored as
Parker Kerslake reached first on an
error, and took second as well on an in-
accurate throw to first. GSL lead 3-1
heading into the second inning.
Vorlicek was hit by the second pitch
he saw and reached second on Roth-
stein’s bunt for a hit to start the second
for GSL.
The two advanced a base as Teddy
Petersen followed Rothstein’s example
and bunted his way on.
Vorlicek scored on Maass’ line-drive
single to left field, and Rothstein
crossed the plate on Lepel’s sacrifice fly
to right-center.

The Glencoe-Silver Lake softball
team’s season came to an end Tues-
day, May 21, at the hands of the
Holy Family Fire.
In a rematch of the 1-0 season
opener that favored the Panthers,
the Fire bested GSL in a high-scor-
ing game that ended 14-9.
“The girls did well,” head coach
Steve Davis said. “They improved
from the first weeks all the way to
the end as we hoped.
“They were a very good group.
Maybe one of the best groups that
got along and liked each other.”
Davis said the girls performed
about how his coaching staff ex-
pected and exceeded in some cate-
gories.
Despite the 5-10 record, Davis is
optimistic moving forward.
“Moriah Maunu did a good job
pitching this year,” Davis said. “She
struggled at times, but we didn’t
make plays behind her either ... A
lot of the girls will be playing sum-
mer ball this year, and they’ll be
back next year. The future’s bright.”
Holy Family 14,
GSL 9
Holy Family took a 1-0 lead into
the second inning, as GSL decided
it was time to score.
Josie Schmitt and Becca Green
scored after singling. Holy Family
walked in a run with the bases
loaded, and Amanda Meyer sent a
single to the outfield for an RBI to
take a 2-1 lead heading into the bot-
tom of the second.
It would be 7-2 at the end of the
second inning, as the Fire erupted
for six runs off of four hits and two
hit batters.
Piper Davis, Schmitt and Oliver
scored for GSL to cut the lead to 7-
5 in the first half of the third inning.
Holy Family’s Hayley Thompson
hit a double to right-center field to
lead off the bottom of the third.
A shortstop error allowed Thomp-
son to score with two outs to extend
the lead to 8-5.
The top of the order came up for
the Panthers in the fourth inning.
Rachel Rusten took a six-pitch walk
to lead off the inning, and advanced
on Steph Klockmann’s single.
Rusten scored three batters later on
a ground out, and Klockmann
crossed the plate on Schmitt’s RBI
single to make it 8-7 Holy Family.
Every time the Panthers closed
the gap, the Fire put its own string
of runs together, keeping the heat on
GSL.
Two doubles and an error at third
base allowed three more runs to
score in the bottom of the fourth for
Holy Family.
Ellie Lepel singled for GSL as the
lead-off batter in the fifth.
Amanda Meyer followed up with
a double, and with no outs the Pan-
thers appeared ready to rally.
A pair of fly outs from Rusten
and Klockmann threatened to extin-
guish the rally.
Lepel and Meyer didn’t know it
yet, but they scored the team’s final
runs of the season to make it 11-9
Holy Family.
Run scoring continued for the
Fire in the fifth and sixth innings,
scoring twice in the former and
once in the latter for the 14-9 victo-
ry.
Despite scoring in the second
through fifth innings, GSL’s offen-
sive production ceased in the sixth
and seventh. The Panthers were re-
tired one, two, three in both innings
as their season came to an end.

The Plato Blue Jays lost in
dramatic fashion Monday,
May 27, to the Hamburg
Hawks after not competing
for two weeks because of
weather and field conditions.
Losing 4-3 on a walk off
home run wasn’t the only
drama that played out during
Monday night’s game, as
Matt Odegaard was apparent-
ly ejected, allowed to re-enter,
and then actually ejected from
the game in the ninth inning.
Hamburg jumped out to a
2-0 lead on the Blue Jays in
the first inning with Brian
Graupmann on the mound.
The Blue Jays rallied in the
fourth as Eric Engelmann led
off with a walk, and advanced
on a bunt by Joe Nix that
gave the Hamburg infielders
trouble.
Tony Wischnack walked as
well as Hamburg’s Mike
Mueller loaded the bases.
Levi Vorlicek grounded out
in the next at bat and drove in
Englemann to make it 2-1.
In the following at bat,
Kyle Panning grounded out as
well to score Zach Junclaus
who was pinch running for
Nix, tying the game at 2-2.
Adam Prehn came in for
Graupmann in the sixth in-
ning and found himself un-
able to get out of a jam.
With runners on first and
third with two outs, Hamburg
sent a dribbler right back at
Prehn that snuck under his
glove and allowed the Hawks
to score, making it 3-2.
The eighth inning is when
the curtain was drawn back,
and the show really began.
Odegaard grounded out
and apparently released his
bat a little too close to the
umpire’s head.
As Odegaard returned to
the dugout, the umpire ad-
vised him not to throw his bat
so close to him.
The two exchanged words
with the umpire stating the
final words, “you’re done,” as
players and fans were left
wondering what had tran-
spired.
Between innings, the um-
pire visited the Blue Jay
dugout to talk things over
with manager Adam
Dammann, which resulted in
him clarifying that he had not
ejected Odegaard.
Down one run in the top of
the ninth, Panning hit a dou-
ble to put himself in scoring
position.
Derek Dittmer singled to
move the tying run to third.
Dittmer then stole second
base, and forced Hamburg’s
Eric Crane to attempt to
throw him out. The throw to
second was off target, so Pan-
ning took off for home and
tied the game up 3-3 as they
headed to the bottom of the
ninth.
Odegaard warmed up on
the mound at the start of the
ninth inning. He was going to
re-enter and relieve Prehn.
As Dammann was visiting
the Hamburg dugout to clarify
that Odegaard had not been
ejected and was going to
come in and pitch, the Ham-
burg dugout protested to the
umpire that he could not re-
enter the game.
After some deliberation, the
umpire sided with the Ham-
burg dugout, and told Ode-
gaard that he was unable to
re-enter since he had ejected
him from the game earlier.
A good five minutes passed
with some creative word
choices and suggestive hand
gestures from Dammann be-
fore the bottom half of the
game’s final inning could start
with Odegaard in the stands,
and Prehn still on the mound
for Plato.
Apparently Hamburg’s
Crane had had enough of the
antics, as he sent the ball over
the left field wall for a 4-3
walk-off home run.
“I don’t want to say any-
thing about the officiating.
We just had a fall-out
tonight,” Dammann said of
his team’s first loss. “A cou-
ple of guys made some men-
tal mistakes ... and we just
didn’t play up to par tonight.”
The Blue Jays travel to
Young America to take on the
Cardinals on Thursday, May
30, at 7:30 p.m., and host the
Norwood Indians on Sunday,
June 2, at 2 p.m.

It’s been a slow start for the
Glencoe Brewers this year.
Fielding a young team, the
Brewers sit at the bottom of
the North Division of the

The team has had chances
to win, but watched games
slip away from errors and
mental mistakes.
They’ll try to right the ship

lington A’s after dropping
games to Brownton and New
Germany.

The Brewers were upended
4-0 on Sunday, May 26,
against the Bruins from
Brownton.
Glencoe threatened in the
top of the first with Derek
Weber standing on third look-
ing to score with one out.
But the Brewers were un-
able to drive him in as co-
manager Stephen Wiblemo
hit a liner to the shortstop,
and Jamie Paumen went
down swinging to end the in-
ning.
It took the Brewers until
the fourth inning to put an-
other baserunner into scoring
position when Josh Kraby hit
a double to left field to lead
off.
Kraby stayed at second for
the duration of the inning as
the next batters were retired
in order.
The Brownton bats woke
up in the fourth as Nick
Heller hit a double to left
field with one out.
Glencoe’s starter John
Thell walked Taylor Schuette
to put another man on, and
Chad Genz hit a liner the
shortstop couldn’t handle and
reached on an error.
Chad Draeger and Deryk
Randt each hit RBI singles to
left field before Spencer
Glaeser reached on a fielder’s
choice, scoring a run to make
it 3-0 Brownton.
Heller scored again in the
sixth for the Bruins when
Schuette hit an RBI double to
left field, giving Brownton a
4-0 lead that Glencoe could
not overcome.
The Bruins improve to 4-2
and host the Gaylord Is-
landers on Wednesday, May
29, at 7:30 p.m. They then
travel to New Germany to

North Division competitor, the
New Germany Dutchmen, on
Thursday, May 23.
The Dutchmen scored eight
runs by the time the Brewers
scored for the first time in the
bottom of the fourth inning.
Mike Lien singled and ad-
vanced to third on Brody
Bratsch’s single to right-cen-
ter field.
Weber reached on an error,
allowing Lien to score, before
he was caught stealing second
to end the inning.
The death blow came in the
sixth inning as Trevor Luedke
sent the first pitch he saw
from Tony Paggen over the
left field wall for a two-out
grand slam, making it 12-1
Dutchmen.
Kraby tried to help extend
the game to a full nine innings
by homering to lead off the
ninth.
But Glencoe left two men
on base as the game ended
after the seventh inning 13-2.

Recent dry weather has
provided the opportunity for a
large percentage of corn and
soybeans to be planted local-
ly. Planting is behind the five-
year average, but the recent
surge in planting has allowed
farmers to catch up this last
week.
My hope is that farmers
find optimum conditions for
planting and timely rains in
the future weeks.
Research from the Univer-
sity of Minnesota indicates
that farmers can still expect
high yields for corn planted
by May 25.
Research conducted at
Lamberton, Morris, and
Waseca from 2009-2011 indi-
cated that 93 percent of the
maximum yield was achieved
by the May 25 planting date
and 89 percent by May 30.
Research conducted at
Lamberton from 1988-2003
indicated that 87 percent of
the maximum yield was
achieved by the May 25
planting date and 82 percent
by May 30.
Jeff Coulter, Extension
corn agronomist, recom-
mends to finish corn planting
soon, but be sure to avoid
planting when soils are too
wet. In order to maximize
economic return, a general
guideline for growers in Min-
nesota is to stick with the
planned seed choices until
May 25.
Coulter also recommends
that when planting occurs be-
tween May 25 and May 31, it
is wise to use hybrids that are
five to seven relative maturity
units earlier than full season
for the region. This reduces
the risk of the corn being
frozen prior to physiological
maturity in early autumn.
Planting grain corn after
May 31 carries high risk in
Minnesota. If corn must be
planted after May 31 in Min-
nesota, growers can reduce
their risk by planting hybrids
that are about 15 or more rel-
ative maturity units earlier
than full-season hybrids.
Other research from the
University of Minnesota indi-
cates that we can expect a
soybean grain yield loss of 15
percent when planted on June
1 and 1 percent per day after
June 1. Stick with the same
soybeans until June 10 and
then move to an earlier soy-
bean variety that is .5 units
earlier. Late June soybean
planting should be around
one unit earlier than your
original variety.
The research conducted by
the University of Minnesota
indicates averages for plant-
ing dates and maturities as
well as what one could expect
for their potential yields. A
growing season with above or
below normal temperatures
and rainfall will ultimately
determine yields.
Farmers should also be sure
to consider their contracted
bushels, potential corn prices
versus soybean prices, and
consult your crop insurance
agent if there are changes that
could change your policy.

ty Extension office at 320-

With no attendees, opposi-
tion or comments, the
McLeod County Planning
Advisory Committee made
quick work of two condition-
al use permit applications at
its May 22 meeting.
The committee will recom-
mend approval of both per-
mits to the McLeod County
Board of Commissioners,
which has final say on the ap-
plications.
The first is for a small
gravel mining operation on
property owned by Charles
Ulrich in Hassan Valley
Township. About six acres of
the property will be mined by
William Mueller & Sons.
The other is for an accesso-
ry structure in access of 2,400
square feet on a parcel less
than 10 acres in size. The ap-
plication is from Barry and
Shannon Visser of Lynn
Township, who are building a
shed for the cold storage of
personal property.
Both permits will be on the
County Board’s consent
agenda on June 4.
