Three seniors on the Glencoe-Silver
Lake track and field team capped off the
2013 season with a state medal this past
weekend at Hamline University.
Ryan Kuester (sixth in the 100-meter
dash), Greg Ober (eighth in the 400-
meter dash) and Tanner Konen (eighth
in the pole vault) each medaled in their
final event as high school athletes.
Konen was the first to place on Fri-
day, with a vault of 13-6, a personal
best, that earned him eighth place; but
not before scaring head coach Josh Met-
calf into thinking that he had scratched
out at a lower height.
“At 12-6 we thought he was out,”
Metcalf said. “We thought he had actu-
ally missed on his third (attempt), but he
made it.”
After missing on his first two at-
tempts at 12-6, Konen had to complete
the vault on his third try to advance to
the next height.
The senior planted the pole perfectly
and shot up over the bar with ease as
pole vaulting coach Mike Coddington
applauded from the infield.
Konen topped out at 13-6 with three
other vaulters, but finished in eighth as
failed attempts and total number of
jumps are taken into scoring considera-
tion.
“I beat my personal best and finished
with a state medal, so that feels good,”
Konen said nonchalantly. “Three years
ago, I never thought this would happen,
so I’m pretty excited.”
“He finishes his high school career
with a state medal, and no one can take
that away from him,” Coddington said.
“He earned it. He’s worked hard and
dedicated himself.”
“To PR (personal record) and get a
state medal in your first trip here, it’s
pretty exciting,” Metcalf said.
Kuester was the first to take the podi-
um for GSL on Saturday, as he and
Ober’s finals took place on the second
day of competition.
Against a strong field of sprinters,
Kuester posted an 11.267 in the 100-
meter dash, good enough for sixth
place.
Heading into a slight wind with
nerves running high, Kuester said it
probably wasn’t his best showing, but
he is happy with the outcome regard-
less.
“It was good until the end,” Kuester
said with a smile. “Then I saw everyone
in front of me ... I don’t really remember
how I was running. I don’t think it was
the best of form, but it kind of all got
into my head. I should have just tried to
stay clear.”
This was Kuester’s fourth appearance
at the state meet. He said he’s happy that
he can relax for a bit now.
“I’m happy with what I’ve done. I’ve
accomplished a lot,” Kuester said. “It’s
going to be mixed emotions. It’s a long
season, so it’s nice to be done, but this
year was kind of short with the indoor
stuff and my injury. So I wish it would
go longer, but it’s going to be nice to
take a break.”
The final Panther to take the stand for
GSL was Ober, who finished eighth in
the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.24.
He also competed in the 200-meter
dash, but did not qualify for the finals.
After a decent start in the 400, Ober
did not have the speed in the last 100
meters to close the gap on the rest of the
group.
Still, Ober said he’s proud of what
he’s been able to do as a GSL athlete.
“It’s been a long road, and I’m proud
of what I’ve accomplished,” Ober said.
Asked how it feels to be done with
his high school career, the graduate said,
“As of right now, it feels REALLY
good. But I know I’m going to miss it.”
Overall, Metcalf said he’s pleased
with the way this year’s boys’ team per-
formed, and he should be.
“We had another great season,” Met-
calf said. “Second in conference as a
team, subsection champs, section
champs, three medalists at state — it’s a

The 2013 Panther baseball
season came to an end at the
hands of a former Wright Coun-
ty Conference team, the Water-
town-Mayer Royals, after an en-
tertaining regular and post-sea-
son that resulted in a 17-4
record.
After losing for the first time
in the section tournament to the
St. Peter Saints, the Panthers
lost 3-1 to Watertown-Mayer in
Belle Plaine on Tuesday, June 4,
ending what looked to be a run
at the state tournament.
“In the big situations, when
we had opportunities to come
through with a two-out hit, we
just didn’t do it today,” head
coach Dean Schwirtz said. “We
struck out in key situations
where the ball needed to be put
in play.”
Senior Reed Dunbar second-
ed his coach’s take on the game.
“We had more hits than them,
we just never could seem to
string them together and get it
going,” Dunbar said.
“They’re just on fire right
now, I guess. Their whole team
is feeling it in the playoffs, and
they just got hot at the right
time,” Dunbar said.
“They had one inning,”
Schwirtz said. “They led-off
with a walk, we had a ground
ball to short that quite possibly
could have been a double play
ball, but we sort of backed away
from it. Then, another walk and

After defeating the Cologne Hollan-
ders 10-6 on Tuesday, June 4, the Plato
Blue Jays traveled to Green Isle for a
South Division matchup with the Irish.
Plato lost 5-1 as they could not get on
base effectively after jumping out to a 1-
0 lead in the first inning.
Pitcher Jacob Bratsch was ejected
after the sixth inning for arguing the
strike zone with the umpire.
A Blue Jay player has been ejected in
each of the two Plato losses this season.
The Blue Jays now take on a busy
schedule within the Crow River Valley
League, kicking off three straight games
with a rematch against Hamburg on Fri-
day, June 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Plato.
Plato then hosts Winsted on Saturday
at 2 p.m., before visiting the Cologne
Hollanders on Sunday for another 2
p.m. game.
Green Isle 5, Plato 1
The game got out to an entertaining
start on Monday, as Kyle Panning
walked with one out, and advanced to
second on a wild pitch to Matt Ode-
gaard.
Odegaard took the next pitch from
Green Isle pitcher Connor Herd for a
deep line drive double that gave Plato a
1-0 start.
Adam Prehn doubled in the next at
bat, which resulted in Odegaard getting
shaken up as he was thrown out at home
for the final out.
Odegaard moved to first from short-
stop as a result of the play.
Lucas Herd hit a single with one out
off Plato pitcher Jacob Bratsch in the
second inning, and advanced on a wild
pitch.
Nate Pilacinski hit a double in the
next at bat, driving in Herd to tie the
game at 1-1 as the teams headed into the
third inning.
The Irish scored again in the third in-
ning as Keller Knoll hit a lead-off dou-
ble and advanced on a Jackson Hallahan
single.
Mike Dhaene hit a fly ball that gave
Tyler Lang problems in right field and it
dropped for a run-scoring error.
Bratsch forced Pilacinski into a
ground out to get out of the inning down
2-1.
Green Isle put the game out of reach
in the sixth inning, scoring three runs as
Pilacinski, Alex Twenge and Knoll each
scored.
Bratsch vocalized to the umpire that
he didn’t like the strike zone he was giv-
ing him, which ultimately resulted in his
ejection from the game.
Panning took over on the mound in
the seventh for Plato, and kept the Irish
scoreless for the rest of the game.
Plato’s offense never threatened at a
comeback, as the Blue Jays were retired
in order in every inning except for the
first and eighth.
“We started off really good,” manager
Adam Dammann said. “But we’ve got a
couple of things we need to improve on
in the infield. We need to just stop mak-
ing some of those mental mistakes.
That’s how we beat ourselves tonight,
our own mental mistakes.”
“We hit the ball hard,” Dammann
said. “It’s good to see that our guys are
at least making good cuts on the ball,

After earning the first two
wins of the season against Ar-
lington and Mayer, the Glencoe
Brewers have lost two straight
to the Waconia Lakers and Gay-
lord Islanders.
In the last two games, the
Brewers have given up 29 hits,
and allowed 26 runs to score.
Glencoe has 19 hits in the
same span, but only seven runs
scored.
The Brewers currently sit in
fifth place in the North Division
of the Crow River Valley
League with a 2-8 record.
Glencoe has four games in
the next week, starting today
(Wednesday) in Glencoe. The
Brewers then travel to Mayer
on Saturday, and host Norwood
on Sunday before visiting
Cokato on Tuesday.

Glencoe 2
Despite losing to Waconia by
seven runs, co-managers Matt
Godel and Stephen Wiblemo
were pleased with the way the
team hit the ball, and hoped it
continued into Thursday’s game
against the Gaylord Islanders.
Leading off for Glencoe in
the first inning, Colt Trebesch
hit a line-drive single before ad-
vancing to second on a passed
ball to Jorrin Pautz.
Pautz hit a single to left field
and scored Trebesch for an
early 1-0 lead.
Brewers pitcher Tony Paggen
struck out the first two Islander
batters in the bottom of the first
before Brian Winter, Trevor
Vaubel and McKoy Rodning
scored one after another for a 3-
1 Gaylord lead.
Rodning scored for Gaylord
again in the third to make it 4-1.
Paggen helped himself in the
fifth, taking a six-pitch walk
with one out. He scored later in
the inning on Trebesch’s single
to shallow right field to cut the
lead to 4-2.
But things soon got out of
hand, as the Islanders scored a
total of 10 runs in the fifth and
sixth innings off Brewer pitch-
ers Paggen, Mike Lien and Josh
Kraby. Everyone in the Gay-
lord lineup scored during that
span, except for Jack Mages, as
the game ended after the top of
the seventh inning in a 14-2
blowout.

The Glencoe Brewers two-
game win streak came to an
end Wednesday night at the
hands of the Waconia Lakers,
losing 12-5.
In their last meeting on
May 12, the Lakers ended the
game in the eighth inning as
they took an 11-1 lead.
Wednesday’s game looked
to be headed in the same di-
rection, despite a 1-0 Brewer
lead after Wiblemo drove in
Derek Weber in the first in-
ning.
Jaime Paumen started his
second game for the Brewers,
coming off a 9-3 victory over
the Mayer Blazers in which
he only allowed three hits,
two earned runs (three total
runs) and struck out 11.
The Lakers left two men on
base in the first, and another
in the second, before ripping
off nine runs in the next three
innings.
The third inning resulted in
more Waconia offense, as
Ronnie Olson drove in Ben
Smothers with an RBI base
rip. Olson scored two batters
later on a wild pitch for a 2-1
lead.
Three more scores came in
the fourth inning for the Lak-
ers, as Kodey Simon, Kevin
Bullis and Nick Litfin made
their way across the plate for
a 5-1 lead.
The same three scored in
the fifth, plus Rob Smothers,
to take a commanding 9-1
lead into the sixth inning.
The Brewer bats, dormant
since the first inning, came to
life in the sixth as Wiblemo
bounced Olson’s third pitch
off the left-field foul pole for
a solo shot.
Lien followed with a six-
pitch walk, and scored on
Ryan Style’s single to center
field to cut the lead to 9-3.
But Waconia added another
run in the seventh, and two
more in the top of the ninth
inning to seal the game.
Glencoe eventually lost 12-
5, with Lien and Brandon
Ebert scoring in the bottom of
the ninth.
Paumen pitched five in-
nings, faced 30 batters, gave
up 11 hits, nine runs (five
earned), walked two and
struck out 5.
“We had five errors and
didn’t give Jaime a lot of de-
fense behind him,” Wiblemo
said after the game. “Waco-
nia’s a good hitting team.
They took advantage of it and
got the hits when they needed
them and got that early lead.
“The good part was that we
didn’t roll over. With a young
team, too, that’s something
we’ve been working on. We
want to keep playing even
when we’re down — through
nine innings — and we did
that today. So that was good.”

The Brownton Bruins saw a
5-4 lead slip away in the top of
the ninth inning as they lost 6-5
to the Winsted Wildcats on
Wednesday, June 5.
The loss drops the Bruins’
Crow River Valley League
(CRVL) record to 3-4, while
they maintain an overall record
of 6-4.
After a scoreless first inning,
the Wildcats scored two runs in
the top of the second, with Josh
Anthony reaching base on an
error and Cullen Schultz joining
him on the bags with a base hit.
An out later, Curtis Her-
bolscheimer laced a single to
plate Anthony, while Schultz
scored on a fielder’s choice play
when Matt Wroge tapped the
ball to third baseman Jake
Vacek, who fired to second to
get Herbolscheimer out.
The Bruins knotted the scored
at 2-2 with two runs in the bot-
tom of the third.
With one out, Spencer Glaeser
and Ryan Grams hit back-to-
back singles to put two runners
on base. Matt Schwichtenberg’s
sacrifice fly to left field scored
Glaeser, while Grams scored on
a single by Taylor Schuette.
The Wildcats scored a go-
ahead run in the top of the fourth
with Anthony leading off with a
single and scoring on a two-bag-
ger by Schultz.
Brownton took the lead for
the first time in the bottom of the
fifth, 4-3, with two runs.
Grams led off with a single,
but was picked off at second on
a fielder’s choice play that put
Schwichtenberg on first.
Schwichtenberg reached second
on a wild pitch, and scored on a
two-out base hit by Schuette,
who advanced on an error.
Bryant Nordby singled to bring
home Schuette.
Winsted tied the game at 4-4
with a run in the seventh. Garrett
Zander started the frame with a
single. The Bruins recorded two
outs on infield pop-ups, but then
allowed a single and a walk to
load the bags. A patient Schultz
drew a walk to allow Zander to
score.
Brownton went ahead again
in the bottom of the eighth with
three walks on two outs loading
the bases. Nick Heller singled to
score Vacek, but the Bruins up
5-4.
A walk and a hit batter set up
the winning runs for Winsted in
the top of the ninth. An out later,
an error allowed Jake Prehn to
score, and Gregg Kohler scored
on a base hit by Jon Guenigs-
man, before Schwichtenberg
turned a solo double play by
snagging a line drive and then
stepping on the bag to get
Guenigsman, who had already
started for second base, out.

5 game. Vacek snagged a baseline
grounder to make the play.
Winsted’s 2-run 9th inning lifts Wildcats over Bruins
a hit, and all of a sudden it’s a
three-run game.”
This year’s team was led by
a number of seniors who had a
great season, and laid the foun-
dation for years to come.
“The number of seniors that
stayed out and played baseball,
I can’t thank them enough,”
Schwirtz said. “They’re the
reason that we’ll have future
success, because of the way
that they led themselves.”

Ethan Maass made his sec-
ond start in five days and was
off to a great start, striking out
three batters in the first two in-
nings.
Glencoe-Silver Lake took a
1-0 lead in the first inning as
Maass scored on Nolan
Lepel’s single to left-center
field with one out.
Dunbar hit his first of three
singles, advancing Lepel to
second before Levi Vorlicek
hit into an inning ending dou-
ble play.
The third inning was when
the game was won and lost.
Jordan Berrios walked as the
lead-off batter for the Royals,
and moved to second as Brett
Johnson knocked a single to
the gap.
A six-pitch walk to Nick
Tschida put Maass in trouble
with the bases loaded and no
outs.
A fly out to Brody Bratsch
by Matt Elsenpeter gave the
Panthers the first out, and hope
that they could get out of the
inning unscathed.
In the next at bat, Maass’
fifth pitch cracked off the end
of Brandon Weege’s bat and
flew over Vorlicek’s head in
left field for a bases-clearing
double, and a 3-1 Royal lead.
After striking out the next
two batters to end the inning,
Maass hurled his glove into
the GSL dugout in frustration.
Schwirtz tried to rouse his
troops, and the team seemed to
be in the game mentally, but
just could not make the plays
needed to win.
Teddy Petersen and Maass
each singled with one out in
the bottom half of the third in-
ning.
Lepel had been clutch in big
situations for the Panthers all
season long, and GSL looked
to him for another big hit.
He battled back and forth
with Watertown’s pitcher Andy
Nichlos, before going down
swinging on a seven-pitch
strikeout.
Dunbar landed an infield
blooper that managed to earn
him a single and advance both
runners.
With ducks on the pond dur-
ing a crucial moment in the
game, Nichlos retired Vorlicek
on a six-pitch strikeout to end
the inning.
Though four innings of
baseball remained, the game
was essentially over.
The Royals had a man on
second base in the fourth, sixth
and seventh innings, but never
scored again. GSL reached the
same mark only once the rest
of the game.
An array of superstitions
took place in the GSL dugout
in the remaining innings.
Assistant coaches placed on-
looking players in specific
spots, and sat in areas they
hadn’t previously, as Schwirtz
paced the gravel in front of the
dugout. But none appeased the
baseball gods, as Elsenpeter
came in to close out the ninth
for the Royals; striking out
two, and getting Teddy Pe-
tersen to end the game on a
ground out.
The Royal’s dugout explod-
ed as they advanced to the sec-
tion championship game
against St. Peter.
The loss is disappointing,
especially considering the Pan-
thers out-hit the Royals, 7-5,
but simply could not score.
Maass pitched seven in-
nings, faced 31 batters, gave
up five hits, three runs, walked
five and struck out 12.

the top of the third inning off
Prehn, who took the mound for
the Blue Jays. Plato tallied anoth-
er run in bottom half of the in-
ning for a 6-2 lead.
Cologne brought three more
runs across the plate in the fourth
inning, and tied the game at 6-6
in the top of the fifth.
But three runs for Plato in the
fifth and one in the sixth proved
to be too much for the Hollan-
ders, as Odegaard closed the
game out after coming in to pitch
in the sixth inning.
Prehn pitched five innings,
gave up eight hits, six runs (four
earned), walked two and struck
out five in his first start of the
season.

Who doesn’t like cake? I
suppose there are a few out
there, but that is something I
just will never understand.
In my constant search for
new recipes to try, I have dis-
covered a number of recipes
that use cake mixes as a main
ingredient, so of course I had
to try a couple of them.
Another of my favorite things this time of
the year is rhubarb!
Rhubarb can be hard to come by, so when I
have it, it is coveted. There is a little patch
that my grandpa planted years ago near my
family’s lake cabin, which I wait for every
year.
I picked what was there the last time I was
at the cabin and made this dessert that I found
online.
Rhubarb Dump Cake/Crisp
4 cups rhubarb, cut into ¼ inch pieces
1 cup white sugar (optional)
1 (3 ounce package) strawberry Jell-o
1 (18.25 ounce) moist yellow cake mix
1 cup water
¼ cup butter, melted
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a
9×13-inch baking dish. Spread the rhubarb
evenly in the bottom of the baking dish.
Sprinkle the sugar over the rhubarb, followed
by the Jell-o, and finally the cake mix. Pour
the water and melted butter over the top. Do
not stir. Bake for 45 minutes or until the
rhubarb is tender.
This turned out more like a crisp or cobbler
than a cake. It was very good and I will make
it again with a few adjustments.
The original recipe calls for one pound or
three to four cups of rhubarb. I used about
three, but would use at least four next time.
It also calls for a cup of sugar, which I
would leave out next time as well. It was real-
ly sweet. There is enough sweetness from the
cake mix and Jell-o without the sugar.
Here is another recipe I tried that turned out
really well. Another keeper.
Upside Down Rhubarb Cake
1 (18.25 ounce) moist yellow cake mix
4 cups diced rhubarb
3/4 cups white sugar
1/2 pint whipping cream
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and
flour a 9x13-inch pan. Prepare cake mix ac-
cording to the package directions. Pour batter
into prepared pan.
In a medium bowl, mix together the rhubarb
and sugar. Spoon the rhubarb mixture over the
cake batter. Drizzle the whipping cream over
the top of the rhubarb.
Bake 40 minutes, or until a toothpick insert-
ed into the center of the cake comes out clean.
Let cake cool completely before turning it out
onto a serving dish.
The orignal recipe called for two cups of
rhubarb and 1-1/4 cups of sugar. After making
the last dessert, I doubled the rhubarb and cut
the sugar to 3/4 cup. It was great. We didn’t
turn it over, just ate it straight out of the pan.
Here is one more easy, summery, fruity
dessert.
Frozen Berry Cobbler
2 12-oz bags frozen mixed berries/peaches
1 box (18.25 oz) white cake mix
12 (or more) ounces of 7-Up or similar
Place frozen fruit in a 9x13-inch baking
dish. Add dry cake mix over the top. Pour
soda slowly over cake mix. DO NOT stir the
cake mix and the soda — this will give you a
“crust.” If you stir the two, you will have a
cake-like topping.
Bake at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes or
longer until berries are cooked.
Could it be any easier?
