The Brownton Bruins swept Ham-
burg in two games in the Crow River
Valley League (CRVL) playoffs last
week to earn a berth in the Region 7C
tournament, in which they will face the
North Division champion, Winsted,
Thursday at 8 p.m. at Vollmer Field in
Glencoe.
The Bruins played Winsted once
during the regular season, losing 6-5
June 5 as the Wildcats pulled out the
win in the ninth inning.
Winsted finished its CRVL season at
16-4, while the Bruins had a 13-8
league record.
The Bruins also drafted Carver lefty
Michael Patton for the region tourna-
ment.
Should the Bruins win Thursday
evening, they will play the winner of
the New Germany vs. Green Isle game
Sunday at 4 p.m. If they lose, they will
play in the losers’ bracket Saturday at
4 p.m.
All of the Region 7C tournament
games will be played in Glencoe.
The Bruins opened their Hamburg
series with a 6-1 win over the Hawks
at Hambug on Wednesday, July 24,
with Brownton’s Josh Wendlandt scat-
tering four Hamburg hits as he struck
out eight and walked just one in a
complete-game outing.
The Bruins scored their first run in
the top of the first as lead-off batter
Spencer Glaeser reached first base on
an error, advanced on a sacrifice bunt
by Ryan Grams and a single by Matt
Schwichtenberg, and scored by steal-
ing home.
The Bruins boosted their lead to 4-0
with three runs in the third. Singles by
Deryk Randt and Ryan Grams put run-
ners on base, with Randt scoring on a
sacrifice fly by Schwichtenberg.
Grams and Heller, who also singled,
both scored on a base hit by Bryant
Nordby.
The Hawks scored their only run in
the bottom of the sixth. Brian Crane
led off with a single, advanced on a
sacrifice bunt by Tim Willems and a
ground-out by Justin Perlich, and
scored on a double by Scot Argen-
bright.
Brownton scored its fifth run in the
seventh with Glaeser scoring on a base
hit by Taylor Schuette. The Bruins
scored an insurance run in the top of
the ninth as Grams walked with one
out, stole second base, reached third on
Schwichtenberg’s single, and scored
by stealing home.
Brownton had 12 hits for the game,
paced by Grams who was three for
three. Schwichtenberg, Schuette and
Nordby had two hits each.
Mike Mueller threw a complete
game for Hamburg, giving up five
earned runs on 12 hits as he struck out
six and walked two.
The Bruins hosted Hamburg Friday
night for the second game of the best-
of-three series, shutting out the Hawks
3-0 behind the arm of Michael Hahn,
who threw a complete game in which
he gave up five hits, fanned 10 and
walked two.
The Bruins put their first run on the
scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth
as Nordby doubled and scored on
Chad Genz’s base hit. They scored
their second run in the fifth as singles
by Brad Daak and Nick Heller set up
an RBI sacrifice fly by Nordby. Two
defensive errors in the bottom the
eighth allowed the Bruins to score
their final run in the bottom of the
eighth.
Glaeser paced the Bruins with two
hits, while Daak, Heller, Nordby,
Schwichtenberg, Genz and Randt each
contributed one.
Andrew Fredrickson got the start for
Hamburg and was tagged with the
loss, giving up two runs on eight hits
as he struck out four and walked four
in six innings. Taz Seibert threw the
final two innings, giving up one run on
no hits as he struck out two and
walked none.

ports are a big part of any community,
and the impact they have on life can
take you places you never thought you
would see.
They also play a significant role in the lives
of those surrounding athletes, like parents, sib-
lings and spouses.
A graduate of Glencoe-Silver Lake’s class of
2004, Lisa Busche, formerly Lisa Savre,
knows this quite well.
The daughter of Mike and Jann Savre, Lisa
has been living in Girona, Spain, with her hus-
band, Matthew Busche, a professional cyclist,
for the past several months.
Matthew, 28, a 2003 graduate from
Wauwatosa West High School in Wisconsin,
attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and
has a double major in management and exer-
cise science. He and Lisa met when she began
studying psychology and competing in cross
country at Luther in the spring of 2004.
“Matthew was a year ahead of me at
Luther,” Lisa recalled. “We got to know each
other as teammates and started dating about
halfway through my freshman year.”
The two dated for about four years, while
competing and attending Luther.
Matthew developed a knee injury at the end
of the cross-country season in 2003. It side-
lined him from track and field in 2004 and
2005, as well as cross country in 2004.
“While I was injured, I picked up the bike as
a form of cross training, which is when my
passion for riding began,” Matthew said.
He returned for the 2005 cross country sea-
son after his injury.
Both he and Lisa competed in the National
Cross Country Meet in 2006, and Matthew
also competed in the event in 2007.
Because of his medical ineligibility in 2004,
Matthew was able to return for an extra cross
country season in 2007.
He was the Iowa Conference MVP that year,
and an All-American NCAA cross country ath-
lete twice by the end of his college career.
After graduating in the fall of 2007, he de-
cided to switch focuses to cycling, and spent
the first three months of 2008 training in Tuc-
son, Ariz.
Shortly after, Matthew started riding for IS
Corp Cycling, a Wisconsin based amateur
team.
In August of 2009, Matthew was given the
opportunity to “stagiaire (try out)” for Kelly
Benefits, a U.S. continental professional team.
“I rode five races with them before receiv-
ing an offer from Team RadioShack,” with
whom he started riding at the start of 2010.
He moved from amateur to professional in
one season, gaining plenty of attention in the
process. He now rides for RadioShack Leop-
ard Trek.
Lisa graduated from Luther in the spring of
2008, and started graduate school at New
Mexico State University in the fall.
They got engaged in 2009.
“Matthew proposed to me in January of
2009 when I was home for Christmas in Min-
nesota after my first semester of graduate
school in New Mexico,” Lisa said. “Our wed-
ding was actually Jan. 2, 2010. One day after
Matthew’s first official contract with Ra-
dioShack started.”
A bride just starting grad school, and a hus-
band in the beginning stages of a cycling ca-
reer meant a “rude introduction to both mar-
riage and cycling!” Matthew said. “We spent
the better part of the first three or four months
of our marriage apart.”
Shortly after their honeymoon, Lisa returned
to grad school in Las Cruces, and Matthew
went to Spain in February for his first Euro-
pean training camp.
“We spent the first three years of our mar-
riage, and my career, juggling cycling for me,
and grad school for her,” Matthew said.
“He came home to the U.S. during his off-
season and racing breaks, and I spent summers
over in Spain,” Lisa said. “But we spent a lot
of time apart.”
In 2011, Matthew’s hard work paid off, win-
ning the USA National Road Race Champi-
onships.
The couple’s living situation improved re-
cently, when Lisa earned her PhD in Decem-
ber of 2012, allowing her to move to Spain to
be closer to Matthew.
“When I started my degree, I wanted to
teach and do research at the college level, and
I’d still really like to do that some day,” Lisa
admitted. “But for the immediate future, we’ve
decided it is more important for us to be on the
same continent!”
They now spend the majority of their time
living in Girand, Spain, during race season,
but also have a home in Brevard, N.C., for off-
season training.
“I still travel a lot, but now Lisa is able to be
at our home base in Spain during the months
when I’m racing around Europe, and at our
home base in North Carolina when I’m racing
or attending sponsor events in North Ameri-
ca,” Matthew said.
“We would have liked to have been able to
make our U.S. base back in the Midwest, but
the majority of the months when I can be in
the U.S. are the winter months, and it is hard
to train in the weather conditions back home.”

Some post-season drama in the
Crow River Vally League playoffs
took place Sunday afternoon, and
Monday night.
The Watertown Red Devils crushed
the Mayer Blazers 13-1 Sunday after-
noon, with a little help from an illegal
player.
Pat Tschida apparently only played
three regular season league games for
Watertown.
An emergency league meeting
Monday night resulted in Watertown
forfeiting game three, and the series,
against Mayer after fielding Tschida.
According to Article 13, Section C
of the Minnesota Baseball Associa-
tion Handbook, regarding illegal par-
ticipation: “The player must play in 4
league games in order to qualify for
post season play.”
Watertown is appealing the deci-
sion to the state board Tuesday night.
Plato was scheduled to play New
Germany, and Green Isle was sup-
posed to face Watertown in the open-
ing rounds of the Region 7C tourna-
ment.

The Plato Blue Jays have ad-
vanced to the Region 7C tourna-
ment hosted in Glencoe after
sweeping the Norwood Indians in
two games.
Plato now faces the Mayer
Blazers Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in
Glencoe.
Eric Engelmann hit a grand
slam in the bottom of the seventh
inning in game one, putting the
score out of reach for Norwood.
“When I hit it, I thought it was a
sac fly,” Engelmann said. “I actu-
ally didn’t see it go out. I didn’t
watch it because I’m old and I
have to run hard.”
Engelmann said he heard his
teammates yelling from the
dugout, and looked up to see the
fielders standing at the wall.
“So, that was all right,” he said
with a laugh.
The momentum stayed in
Plato’s favor in game two, lam-
basting the Indians 14-5.
Plato selected Mike Mueller
from the Hamburg Hawks in the
first of two post season drafts.
Mueller was drafted by Plato in
2007, and was an integral part of a
state championship that year.

The Glencoe Brewers’ season
ended last week when they
were swept in two games by the
New Germany Dutchmen.
The teams from the Crow
River Valley League’s North
Division clashed Tuesday and
Thursday at Vollmer Field.
New Germany kept Glen-
coe’s offense at bay in game
one. They won 2-0 as Trevor
Luedke went the distance on the
mound, and shut out Glencoe’s
offense.
Game two saw more hitting
and scoring from both teams.
Glencoe even took a 5-3 lead in
the seventh, but succumbed to
the Dutchmen, who scored
three runs in the bottom of the
inning.
“We just had too many mis-
takes,” co-manager Stephen
Wiblemo said.
The keys to a successful sea-
son next year revolve around
better hitting and reducing those
mistakes, according to Wible-
mo.
“We need to keep getting bet-
ter at hitting, that’s the big thing
we need to work on,” Wiblemo
said. “And we need to be able
to shake mistakes off. In the
first inning we made one. We
need to shake that off and not
let it compound like that.”
On the season, the Brewers
committed 62 errors in 27
games. About 40 percent of
those coming from the short-
stop position.
The best ERA on the team
came from Derek Bratsch at
0.52 in 17-1/3 innings pitched.
Brody Bratsch had the high-
est batting average on the team,
boasting a .309 in 68 at-bats.
Wiblemo led the team in
RBIs with 14, and tied for sec-
ond in runs with 12 on 26 hits.
Four Brewers were drafted in
the North Division’s first draft:
Winsted: Colt Trebesch; Waco-
nia: Stephen Wiblemo; New
Germany: Jaime Paumen;
Mayer: John Thell.

The Brewers got into a hole
early in Thursday’s game two
against New Germany.
Luedke singled leading off
for the Dutchmen. Evan Reed
reached on a fielder’s choice
that prompted a throwing error
from Glencoe pitcher Jaime
Paumen, which allowed both to
advance a base.
Brad Noerenberg sent a fly
ball to Derek Weber in center
field that dropped for an error,
and allowed Luedke to score.
A fielder’s choice by Dan
Fagerhaug plated Reed, and
notched the first out for Glen-
coe. Fagerhaug scored two bat-

A repeat championship just
was not in the books for the
Plato Legion Post 641 team.
They lost 1-0 to Sibley East
on Saturday, July 27.
Post 641 defeated Water-
town on Friday to advance to
the next round the following
day against Sibley East.
But they ran into a hot
pitcher at the wrong time, as
Sibley’s Brody Rodning
struck out 18 in the 1-0 victo-
ry.
Despite the strikeouts,
Plato out-hit Sibley East 4-2,
but could not plate a run
when needed. Last year’s
team won the state champi-
onship on a walk-off home
run by Adam Prehn, who
pitched in Saturday’s game
for Plato.
The right-hander had an-
other dominant pitching per-
formance, allowing only one
run on two hits. He also
struck out nine, but his per-
formance was buried under
Rodning’s avalanche of
strikeouts.
Plato ended with an 8-4
record.
Sibley East 1,
Plato 0
Plato never even got on the
board against the Sibley East
Legion team, as Rodning
made it look like they had
holes in their bats.
Plato threatened in the first
inning when Levi Vorlicek
and Ethan Maass hit a pair of
singles.
That is when Rodning
shifted into high gear, and
never really slowed down. He
struck out the next three bat-
ters to get out of the inning.
Notching nine strikeouts
Prehn dueled with Rodning
and only gave up one run.
Rodning scored the lone
run in the game as well,
reaching on a single in the
bottom of the sixth inning.
A sacrifce bunt by Cody
Doetkott moved Rodning to
second, before scoring on a
single from Zac Weber for a
1-0 lead.
By the time Rodning
crossed the plate, he had al-
ready racked up 15 strikeouts
on the mound.
The game ended in the sev-
enth after he struck out three-
straight batters.
Every Plato batter struck
out at least once as their sea-
son came to a close.

The post-season rematch
between these two teams of-
fered plenty of action and
some late-game drama, as
Plato won on a walk-off sin-
gle.
Plato was up 1-0 after the
first inning. Vorlicek reached
on a single, and scored three
batters later on an RBI single
from Nolan Lepel.
Watertown went up 4-1 in
the third inning, with three
batters hitting doubles off of
Maass.
Watertown scored once
more in the top of the fifth,
taking a 5-1 lead.
Plato plated two in the fifth
when Prehn lifted a two-run
homer to the outfield, driving
in Maass, who doubled, to
cut the lead to 5-3.
Plato scored one run in the
sixth, as Goettl came around
to cut the lead to 5-4.
Brendan Weege hit a solo
home run in the seventh for
Watertown’s sixth run of the
game.
Things were not looking
good for Plato, trailing 6-4
heading into the final inning.
Lepel led off the seventh
by taking a pitch to the body
before Reed Dunbar singled.
Petersen singled and Ker-
slake walked, bringing up
Chris Roth.
Roth singled and plated the
game-winning run as Plato
came back to win 7-6.

size of Edina, and Lisa’s roots
are in rural Minnesota, the two
acknowledge there are some
major differences living, and
competing, in Europe.
“I had never been to Eu-
rope, let alone raced my bike
there, and I had never even re-
ally raced my bike profession-
ally in the USA,” Matthew
said. “The level of competi-
tion and depth of the peloton
(the main body of riders in a
race) over there is so much
greater than here in the USA,
that I was simply surviving
my first year, and even my
second.
“Thankfully, I had great
staff, directors and teammates
to help me learn and grow as a
cyclist,” Matthew said. “A
teammate let me stay at his
house in Girona when I first
went to Europe, so I didn’t
have to struggle with housing
immediately. Some of the
other, older Americans helped
teach me how to navigate the
peloton, and taught me how to
feel at home, even when in
Europe.”
Lisa pointed out some of the
differences of everyday life in
Spain.
“The most noticeable differ-
ences of life over there center
around their daily schedules
and food!” Lisa said. “First,
they have very different work
hours. Shops are open in the
morning from 10 a.m. to 2
p.m. Then, everything closes
for siesta!
“Some stores will reopen in
the evening, but many banks
and government buildings do
not.
“Restaurants don’t open for
lunch until after 2 p.m., and
for dinner until 8:30 p.m. at
the earliest. And if you are
there at that time, the place
will be really empty,” she said.
One major difference Lisa
noted, was the duration of
meals in Europe.
“If you go out for lunch or
dinner, you should expect to
be there for several hours, as it
is much more of a social activ-
ity. Usually the table is yours
for the night.
“At first, we couldn’t be-
lieve how long it took to get a
meal. But, now we’ve learned
to really appreciate sitting and
talking and enjoying the time
with your dinner compan-
ions.”
While most of us are accus-
tomed to shopping at grocery
stores with everything we
need under one roof, most of
the shopping done in their lo-
cation is done at local mar-
kets, Lisa said.
“We buy most of our food at
the market, which is a big red
building filled with various
stands selling fish, meat,
bread, nuts, etc.
“Outside, the local farmers
bring all their produce and set
up tables. Even if you don’t go
to the market, then you have
to go to the butcher and the
bakery, or search for a little
store that might sell the ingre-
dient you are looking for.”
While some larger grocery
stores exist, Lisa said gather-
ing your food for the day is
“more of an adventure!”
Part of that adventure stems
from the fact that the down-
town area of Girona is cob-
bled, pedestrian streets, ac-
cording to Lisa. Which means
you are typically on foot for
transportation, so it is a good
thing both enjoy endurance
activities.
“Even on the roads you can
drive down, there is no park-
ing, so everyone walks every-
where,” Lisa said. “We live up
a big hill, so I have a little
buggy that I can take down to
the market when I’m getting a
big load of groceries, and then
pull back up the hill behind
me.”
One thing that comes with
the territory of being a profes-
sional cyclist is crashing.
Matthew has been pretty
fortunate with only a few in-
juries in his cycling career.
“My worst resulting in a
broken collar bone,” he said.
But that doesn’t keep Lisa
from worrying about him
while he is racing.
“I do get really nervous
watching races,” she said.
“Every time you see a pileup,
your heart skips a beat ... The
most important result I want at
the end of every race is for
him to finish upright and in
one piece!”
“Crashing is no fun,”
Matthew said. “It is a real un-
fortunate part of the sport, and
definitely the scariest part be-
cause it can be as serious as
death.
“We go at extremely high
speeds and have little protec-
tion besides a helmet and
lycra. Unfortunately, lycra
tends to shred on contact with
pavement, so then you have a
high probability of losing lots
of skin.”
Chasing your dreams obvi-
ously has its consequences,
but the couple seems to em-
brace whatever those may be,
and work through them to-
gether.
Whether or not the lives
they are leading are what they
envisioned, they have seized
an opportunity that definitely
makes for an intriguing exis-
tence.
“Now that I’m done with
school, I hope to do a bit more
exploration while we are liv-
ing over in Europe,” Lisa said.
“We know Matthew won’t
race bikes for the rest of his
life, so we’re trying to em-
brace the experience now.”
Knowing that he cannot
race forever, he was asked
what the future holds for him-
self.
“I see myself continuing to
grow as a cyclist,” he said. “I
have had a steep learning
curve since I didn’t grow up
cycling like most of the guys I
race with. But I think it is be-
ginning to level out, and I am
becoming a more consistent
rider.
“I would like to become
more competitive in the week-
long stage races, and, hopeful-
ly, develop into a good grand
tour rider.
“I hope I can ride the Tour
de France in the near future. I

Matt Odegaard.
Tyler Lang hit a single two
batters later that plated Ode-
gaard.
The Indians manufactured a
run in the seventh to cut the
defecit to 2-1.
The bottom half of the in-
ning is when Englemann hit a
liner into the trees in left field
for a grand slam. The blast
scored Panning, Prehn and
Odegaard, and crushed the In-
dians’ rally.
Panning scored again in the
eighth on a single from Ode-
gaard.
Odegaard relieved Wis-
chnack after seven innings. He
allowed one hit and struck out
one in two innings.

would also like to earn a spot
on the 2016 Olympic team, as
well as win the national cham-
pionship again.”
With a full plate of goals
and ambitions, it appears both
will continue upon the path
they are currently riding on.
The sport has had an
unimaginable impact on not
only their lives, but also their
families, whom they stress are
very important.
“I remember my mom,
(Jann) joking to me when she
was driving me down to New
Mexico to start grad school
that she was glad Matthew
was in the picture, so she
wouldn’t have to worry about
me falling for a southerner
and moving away from the
Midwest,” Lisa recalled.
That plan backfired, as they
currently spend most of their
time in different countries.
Despite the distance be-
tween loved ones, the sport
Matthew now calls an occupa-
tion has impacted Lisa’s fami-
ly as well.
Her brother, Tim, a 2009
GSL graduate, has taken up
racing as well, and started a
team at St. Thomas Universi-
ty. He will be covered in next
week’s issue of The Chroni-
cle.
“It has been really fun
watching my family embrace
cycling in their support of
Matthew,” Lisa said. “Tim’s
been getting really serious
about riding competitively,
but even dad and mom have
been doing a lot of riding late-
ly.
“I don’t think I ever would
have thought I’d see my dad
out in public in spandex, but
rumor has it, you might just
catch a glimpse if you’re
heading over the bridge early
in the morning!” Lisa said.
“It’s cliché, but we have to
thank all our family and
friends for their undying sup-
port,” Matthew said. “Having
a good support network is so
crucial to success. We would
not be nearly as successful as
we have been in running, cy-
cling, school and marriage as
we have been without every-
one around us.”
Remember to check out
next week’s issue for the con-
tinuation of this story on Tim
Savre, Lisa’s brother.
ters later on a passed ball after
reaching third on a single from
M.J. Iverson.
Glencoe started to chip away
at the 3-0 deficit lead in the top
of the third inning.
Jorrin Pautz singled with one
out. Brody Bratsch slapped a
double to left field that put Pautz
on third.
After a ground out from Josh
Kraby, Wiblemo hit a bases
clearing single to cut the lead to
3-2.
Wiblemo drove in Brody
Bratsch again in the fifth with
another single, tying the game at
3-3.
Two innings later, the Brewers
took the lead as Brody Bratsch
and Wiblemo scored on a two-
out single by Mike Lien. Glen-
coe had a 5-3 lead heading into
the bottom of the seventh.
Just when it seemed like the
momentum was shifting Glen-
coe’s way, the Dutchmen went
back on the offensive.
Reed reached on a shortstop
error with one out.
Noerenberg singled in his
fourth at-bat, moving Reed to
third.
Fagerhaug singled as well,
plating Reed to make it 5-4.
Iverson sent the second pitch
he saw from Paumen deep into
the outfield for a double, scoring
Noerenberg and Fagerhaug for a
6-5 lead.
The Brewers tried to retaliate
in the eighth, as Marc Wawrzy-
niak took a five-pitch walk to
lead off.
Pautz moved him over on a
ground out before Brody
Bratsch walked as well.
Wiblemo came up two batters
later with two outs and the tying
run on second.
He fouled the third pitch from
Reed high in the sky along the
first baseline.
New Germany first baseman
Jake Durkin tracked the ball and
made a sensational diving catch
against the fence for the third
out, extinguishing the Brewer
rally.
The game ended an inning
later.

Game one against the New
Germany Dutchmen put the
Brewers in a must-win position
after losing 2-0.
Both teams threatened with
runners in scoring position in the
first two innings.
Colt Trebesch went all nine
innings for the Brewers, and
held New Germany to two runs
on eight hits. He walked two and
struck out five, but the Brewer
offense never came around to
help out.
Luedke matched Trebesch’s
performance on the mound. He
pitched a complete game, giving
up seven hits, no runs, walked
five and struck out five. The dif-
ference was in the New Ger-
many offense.
The Dutchmen struck in the
top of the third inning when M.J.
Iverson scored Reed on a left-
field double. Reed had singled,
advanced on a sacrifice bunt and
on a ground out before taking
the 1-0 lead.
Luedke helped himself in the
top of the fifth, hitting a ground-
rule double to left-center field.
He advanced to third on a
ground out, and scored on a dou-
ble by Fagerhaug for a 2-0 lead.
In the eighth, with one out,
and runners on second and third,
Tony Paggen was up in the
count, 3-0. Luedke battled back
and got Paggen swinging for out
two.
Paumen popped a foul ball to
the first baseman for out three,
as Kraby and Wiblemo were left
on base.
Glencoe left a total of 12 men
on base, seven of which were in
scoring position.
