Football in the Wright County
Conference has always been tough
for about a decade or more, and this
year’s Glencoe-Silver Lake varsity
football team will face a gamut of
battle-tested teams.
The only two blemishes for last
year’s team were a pair of losses to
Hutchinson, with the latter ending the
Panthers’ season in the second round
of the Section 2 Class AAAA play-
offs.
But Hutch isn’t the team the Pan-
thers need to worry about in this
year’s playoffs, as GSL has moved
down a class in sections. Head coach
Scott Tschimperle knows from expe-
rience that the WCC will have his
team used to competition by the post
season.
“I still think it’s (WCC) the best
conference in Class AAA,” Tschim-
perle said. “The level of competition
and the playoff caliber teams that
come out of our conference and get
into the state tournament just proves
what kind of conference we have.”
The Holy Family Fire host GSL on
Thursday night to open up the regular
season for both teams.
Last year, the Panthers defeated the
Fire 46-21 in the opening game, but
Holy Family’s top running back,
Chazz Johnson, was injured for that
game. The Fire eventually went on to
play Hutch in the state championship
game, and lost 67-7.
GSL’s first two games of the sea-
son are at Holy Family, and hosting
Hutchinson, which means it will be
tested early, and often.
“It’ll be the typical GSL-Hutchin-
son game,” Tschimperle said of the
cross-county rivalry. “We know
Hutch is very good, and they know
we’re very good. It’s just a fun at-
mosphere to play in, and the compe-
tition is just spectacular.”
Last weekend, GSL hosted its an-
nual scrimmage with New Prague,
BOLD and Minneapolis North com-
ing in to give the team some different
looks.
“I feel like we’re going to be pre-
pared for Holy Family,” captain
Keenan Mehlos said of his defense
after the scrimmage. “We really start-
ed hitting people after the first scrim-
mage, and kind of got the kinks out a
little bit.”
“After that first game, we really
got rolling,” captain Jake Stuede-
mann agreed. “It was just getting
those kinks out (after) the first
game.”
Like most GSL football teams, the
goal this year is to make it back to
the state tournament, and hopefully
bring home another championship.
“Our goal every year is to get to
the dome,” Tschimperle said. “The
last couple of years, it’s been unfortu-
nate that we didn’t get there. It’s a
long road, and a long haul to get
there.”
The captains know that in order to
get there, the whole team will have to
work together.
“The goal is state, and I think we
can get there, too, if we’re devoted
and work hard in practice,” captain
Dalton Clouse said. “As long as
everyone’s at practice, doing their
part and showing up,” the senior full-
back said the team has a shot at their
goal.
Another part of that will be getting
younger players up to speed on both
sides of the ball.
“They have to figure out the
schemes, figure out all the plays and
do their jobs,” Mehlos said.
“They can’t be afraid to hit,”
Stuedemann said. “We’ve got Colton
(Lueders) out at running back,” so
some of the underclasmen will need
to step up.
If they can perform not only in
games, but in practice, Tschimperle
said this team can accomplish a lot.
“What’s going to make this team is
good competition from our reserves,”
the head coach said. “High school
kids have a hard time focusing on
that. Gus (Mendoza, filling in for
Lueders at HB) literally almost drove
me nuts. But I thought he did really
well on Saturday. “
It all boils down to working to-
gether as a team, in order to be suc-
cessful, including the coaches,
Tschimperle said.
“All 22 guys, and special teams,
play a huge role,” he said. “Everyone
has to work together, and all the
coaches have to be on the same
page.”

One inning. That’s all it took for
the Plato Blue Jays’ season to come
to a screeching halt against the New
Prague Orioles in the second round
of the state tournament Friday night.
The Orioles won 12-1, but it was
a neck-and-neck game until the sev-
enth inning, when New Prague
dropped seven runs on the Blue
Jays.
Plato is one of nine teams (out of
32 that were left) that ended its sea-
son this past weekend after earning a
first-round bye.
“As much as I hate to say it, it’s
tough when you don’t play for al-
most two weeks,” manager Adam
Dammann said. “It’s a little tougher
to get back into the swing of it. We
came back. We did a lot of practic-
ing, but all I can say is that the better
team won today.”
Asked if he was surprised by the
seventh-inning rally after Plato tied
the game in the previous inning,
catcher Derek Dittmer said, “Ab-
solutely. I thought that was all the
momentum we needed after that.”
Finishing with a 24-6 record,
Plato did not find itself in many situ-
ations like the one on Friday night,
something Dittmer said was notice-
able.
“I think we didn’t know how to
react to it,” Dittmer said. “There
were a lot of heads down.”
Despite coming up short in the
state tournament, Plato veteran
Boomer Graupmann said this year’s
team was a group of “tight, experi-
enced players.
“They didn’t panic and kept their
calm throughout the season, and in
games when we had bad stretches,”
Graupmann said. “We rallied around
each other. Everybody, in different
games, stepped up and did some-
thing. It was a full one through nine,
one through 10, lineup. It wasn’t
two or three guys doing it all year.”
The stands were packed with Blue
Jay faithful, but the excitement they
had witnessed all year long ended in
one long inning.
“I want to give a shout out to our
fans for always coming out, and
being there to cheer us on,”
Dammann said. “Especially in times
like this. It’s tough to swallow this
one and lose it, but, hey, we’ll be
back next year.”
New Prague 12,
Plato 1
Chris Bullis, draftee from Waco-
nia, started for Plato, and kept New
Prague hitless through three innings.
In the fifth inning, New Prague
took the lead when Dan Novak
scored on a single by Aaron Shetka
after walking and stealing second.
Retaliating in the bottom of the
sixth, Plato manufactured a run,
managing to score Adam Prehn on a
sacrifice fly from Tyler Lang. Prehn
reached on a single and advanced to
third on a pair of bunts by Matt Ode-
gaard, who singled, and Eric Engel-
mann before barely beating the
throw from the outfield.

Jays were about to go on another

GSL is 1-6 after hosting the quads,

cially on Thursday. We were
playing two big schools in Cen-
tennial and Mounds View.
Mounds View is kind of a peren-
nial power in Class AA.”
Though they have lost the ma-
jority of their matches,
DeCorsey said his players
looked better than the scores
show so far.
“Score wise, it doesn’t look
pretty,” he said. “But I’ve seen
some things that will be posi-
tives down the road. We have a
tough schedule, and it’s hard on
this team, because we’re not that
experienced as a team ... What
we’ve seen now will prepare us
and make us better, and that’s
what we’re looking for at this
point.”
On Saturday, the Panthers’
No.1 doubles team that consist-
ed of Kelly Arnold and Rachel
Rusten posted a team-best sec-
ond-place finish.
DeCorsey said playing the
pair in doubles opened up an op-
portunity for some of the other
girls to see tougher competition
in singles.
“Callie Raduenz and Lindsey
Wedin are normally our No.3
and No.4, but they got an oppor-
tunity to play against some bet-
ter competition on Saturday,”
DeCorsey said. “They may not
have won, but I think they im-
proved in each meet. Callie, the
girl she faced against Princeton
is ranked 15th in state. So now,
when they go back to playing
No.3 and No.4, I expect them to
play a lot better.”

If two brilliant minds truly
are better than one, then it is no
surprise that legendary coach
Dave Dose has returned to the
GSL sidelines.
“We’re excited to have him
back,” Tschimperle said. “He’s
been such a vital part of Pan-
ther football. Just the knowl-
edge of the game, and what he
brings to the staff, and to help
our kids, he’s second to none.”
When Tschimperle asked his
long-time coaching comrade to
return, Dose said, “The minute
he asked me, I was back in.
That was an instant ‘You bet!’”
After a year of assistant-
coaching at GFW, Dose said
he’s happy to be back at GSL,
where a lot of the same staff he
worked with still resides.
“All the guys that were my
assistants are basically still
there,” Dose said. “It’s the per-
fect role for me to step right
back in, because I know the
coaches so well. I just asked
them to plug me in where I can
help.”
While the coach will prima-
rily work with linebackers and
tight ends, he’ll also help with
in-game adjustments from the
press box. He also said he’s
hoping to help the team return
to the Metrodome.
“We’re going to do every-
thing we can to get back to that
building in the Twin Cities,”
Dose said. “That’s what we
want. That’s one of our goals.
We sure hope we can sell the
kids that it’s worth all the hard
work to get back there.”
Whether or not GSL returns
to the Metrodome is up to the
players, but ultimately, Dose
said he’s just excited to be
coaching again.
“The most important thing is
to make football fun for the
kids, and teach them the funde-
mentals,” he said. “That’s the
fun of going to practice and
seeing kids develop. Anyone
who coaches for a period of
time will probably say the best
thing is the relationship with
the kids, and that’s what I want
to get out of it.”

Bullis beaned Novak to lead
off the inning, who was
forced out on a fielder ’s
choice by Eric Wagner in the
next at-bat. Bullis then beaned
Aaron Shetka to put runners
on first and second.
Ted Nytes ripped Bullis for
an RBI double, scoring Wagn-
er, which prompted a pitching
change from Plato.
Tony Wischnack entered for
Bullis with runners on second
and third, and retired Jake
Malz on a groundout for the
second out of the inning.
But the pitching woes con-
tinued, as Wischnack walked
the next two batters, plating
Aaron Shetka.
A hard hit ball by Dan Shet-
ka in the next at-bat resulted
in an error and scored two
more for the Orioles.
A fly ball to center field
from Austin Bachman trou-
bled Nick Johnson, as the ball
landed for an error, plating
two more and allowing Bach-
man to reach third on the
throw to home. He scored in
the next at-bat on a single.
Plato never scored another
run, and only reached base
two times in the final three in-
nings, both on walks.
New Prague scored four
more in the top of the ninth,
ousting Plato from the Class C
state tournament.
