It took eight plays for the Glencoe-
Silver Lake Panthers to find the end
zone against the Holy Family Fire in
the season opener on Thursday, that
ended 34-7 in favor of GSL.
“For an opener, we’ll take that,”
head coach Scott Tschimperle said.
“You never know with that team
(Holy Family). I’m very pleased with
the way our kids prepared for the
whole week. They were ready.”
While he may be happy with this
week, Tschimperle knows his team
will have to continue to evolve, espe-
cially with Hutchinson visiting on Fri-
day.
“No question about it, we did a lot
of good things,” he said. “But there’s
also room for improvement. Hutch is
a very good football team, but we are,
too. We just have to prepare for the
next four days.”
Leading the charge for the Panthers
offensively was senior halfback Jake
Stuedemann, who had 115 yards rush-
ing on 18 carries, and three touch-
downs.
The senior captain said the Fire’s
defenders were “knifing in, and really
killing everything inside.” Which
prompted GSL’s offense to run out-
side the tackles more.
“We started hitting the six hole, and
just reading the outside,” Stuedemann
said.
GSL racked up 263 rushing yards
on 52 carries. Junior quarterback
Keaton Anderson was seven of nine,
and threw for 93 yards and two touch-
downs.
The offense accrued 16 first downs,
and 356 total yards, and left Tanner

The boys’ soccer team kicked off its
regular season last week with losses to
Mound-Westonka and Chain of Lakes
Soccer Club.
The Panthers have been outscored
11-0 in the first two games of the sea-
son.
Though they have yet to score a goal
or notch a win, head coach Jeff Shults
said the two games will provide his
team with experience for the rest of the
season.
“We were working as a team to fig-
ure out how to play, and what needed
to be done,” Shults said. “It will be
good preparation for the rest of the sea-
son.”
Lacking reserves makes it tough on
the team, especially when its oppo-
nents have a full bench of players
ready to sub in. Still, the head coach
said there are things the team can im-
prove upon to be successful.
“We still have to work on funda-
mental skills and passing and support,”
Shults said. “And we still need to be in
physically better shape. Especially
playing without subs. But I think it will
take care of itself — if we go without
substitutions — if we get in better
shape.”
Senior midfielder Eduardo Herrera
echoed his coach’s observation.
“Conditioning,” Herrera said of
what Glencoe-Silver Lake can take
away from these first losses. “We got
some good conditioning for the season,
and we can learn from our mistakes.
We can definitely take some positives
away, that we got some shots and a
few attempts at goals. We did some
things right, so we can use that for the
next game.”
The two things the senior said they
need to work on for the next game is,
“passing, and a lot of listening.”
GSL hosts Hutchinson on Sept. 5,
and travels to Waconia on Sept. 9.
Both games are at 5 p.m.

Glencoe-Silver Lake was down 1-0
heading into halftime of Friday’s game
against the Chain of Lakes Roosters.
Head coach Jeff Shults tried to instill
a sense of urgency to score during the
intermission, but the Roosters kept the
Panther offense in check.
At 28:27 in the second half, Trevor
Meed gave the Roosters a 2-0 advan-
tage.
Jacob Fehrenbach and Aaron Geisen
put some shots on goal in the second
half, but to no avail.

Despite losing the first two games
of the season, the Glencoe-Silver
Lake varsity volleyball team has
been in every set of every game,
and its captains have definitely
shown why they lead this team.
Hosting the Holy Family Fire on
Thursday for parents night, GSL
claimed the first set 28-26, behind
eight kills from captains Stephanie
Klockmann and Lexi Kerslake.
But the Fire came right back and
edged the Panthers in the next three
sets, 25-20, 25-20 and 25-23.
GSL’s attacking percentage was
14.63 in the first set, but dropped to
-2.78 in the next set, as the Panthers
committed nine attacking errors to
only eight kills. That percentage im-
proved in the next two sets, but the
Panthers still lost.
A young team with mostly small-
er players, GSL only amassed three
solo blocks during Thursday’s
game.
Klockmann led the way with 15
kills, Kerslake followed with nine
of her own.
The duo had 17 digs each against
the Royals. Cortney Konen and Tay-
lor Novak each had 15 in that game
as well.
Layne Hermann had 29 set assists
against Holy Family, and 31 against
the Royals.
The Panthers boasted a 90.7 serv-
ice receive percentage against Holy
Family, and 97.3 percent against
Watertown-Mayer.
In two games, GSL has been
outscored by a total of 15 points.
The Panthers have scored 175
points to its opponents’ 190.
To top it off, Kerslake will be
playing with a plastic-casted broken
finger on her strong hand for ap-
proximately six weeks.
Regardless of the two close losses
to start the season, and an injured
captain, head coach Lori Schwirtz is
happy with the team’s performance
so far. According to Schwirtz, the
girls just need to learn to close out
situations this year by being “a little
more savvy.”
“(We) can’t afford to get behind
in a game when our opponents are
equal,” Schwirtz said. “We knew
coming into this we would be a pre-
dominatnly small team, so we
would have to be scrappy and play
solid defense ... Overall, the girls
played respectfully.”
The Panthers host Sibley East on
Monday at 7 p.m. at the Glencoe-
Silver Lake High School.

Lepel and Becker in
sync as No.1 doubles

Starting out 0-3, the Glen-
coe-Silver Lake girls’ soccer
team has steadily been improv-
ing.
In their recent 4-2 loss to the
Chain of Lakes Roosters Soc-
cer Club, the Panthers clawed
for every point and scoring op-
portunity.
In the opening game against
Willmar, the Panthers were out-
shot 23-5 in a 3-0 loss to the
Cardinals, despite keeping the
score tied at 0-0 by halftime.
While he would rather have
wins than losses, head coach
Zach Otto-Fisher was happy
his team found the back of the
net.
“I’m just glad we scored two
goals,” Otto-Fisher said. “At
yesterday’s game, they out shot
us 44-2. So I told the girls
today that we need to change
that. We can’t let our goalie
have 44 shots on her.”
The head coach felt his team
was equally matched, but ulti-
mately made a few mental mis-
takes that cost them the game.
“I’d say it was a pretty equal
second half,” he said. “It stinks
when you out shoot them and
they win, but that’s just how it
is. We made a few mental mis-
takes back there (on defense),
but that’s going to happen.
When you’ve got some seventh
and eighth graders, they’re
going to make mental mistakes.
But we’re young, we’re going
to fix it.”
Freshmen midfielder, Perla
Lopez, who scored GSL’s first
goal of the season, said it’s a
fun group of girls to play with
despite the losses, and that they
have to communicate more, as
well as take more shots.
“More communication,”
Lopez said of what the team
can improve upon. “I think we
can talk more. We were more
aggressive in this game com-
pared to the other games. I
think we need to just take more
shots. I always like to pass it
because I’m afraid I’m never
going to make it. But we have
to take more shots in order to
score.”
The Panthers proved that if
they can put the ball near the
goal, they can come away with
some points, as Lopez and fel-
low freshman Macy Rhodes
each notched a goal against a
more experienced team.
GSL hosts Hutchinson on
Sept. 5, and travels to Waconia
on Sept. 9. Both games are at 7
p.m.
***
The Rooster’s Kally Danzl
took a 1-0 lead at 20:28 in the
first half during a scramble in
front of GSL’s goal.
Lopez scored the first goal of
the season for the Panthers at
8:29 of the first half when she
got loose on a breakaway, and
scored the equalizer on Roos-
ter goal tender Emily McCoy,
tying the game at 1-1.
With 4:17 left in the first
half, Danzl notched her own
breakaway goal for a 2-1 lead
heading into the half.
The Panthers looked ener-
gized and aggressive in the
opening minutes of the second
half, but Danzl proved to be too
much for GSL.
Approximately eight minutes
into the second half, Danzl
streaked through the GSL de-
fense on another break away,
resulting in a 3-1 lead, and a
hat trick for the junior.
One minute and eight sec-
onds later, Danzl had her fourth
goal of the game in the back of
the GSL net, taking a 4-1 ad-
vantage.
Thirty eight seconds after
Danzl and the Roosters cele-
brated a fourth goal, Macy
Rhodes of GSL cut the lead to
4-2.
After receiving a pass from
mid-field, Rhodes kicked a
high-ball from about 25 yards
out. The Rooster goal keeper
prematurely jumped for a
block, and the ball dropped like
a bomb from the sky on the
goal line and bounced in for the
final score.

some key plays for the Fire.
“I was definitely having my

utes and eight plays later, Dal-
ton Clouse scored the Panthers’
first touchdown on an 8-yard
pass from Keaton Anderson.
The Fire wasted no time re-
taliating, scoring in just three
plays, when Chazz Johnson
busted a 64-yard touchdown
run on third and eight.
But that was all the scoring
Holy Family accomplished in
the game.
Meanwhile, GSL employed
its same style that’s been so
successful over the years:
smashmouth, three yards in a
cloud of dust, football.
The second possession for
GSL started at its own 49 with
11:14 left in the second quarter.
After a first down, Stuede-
mann lost two yards up the
middle, but sprung a 42-yard
touchdown on the ensuing play
behind the right side of the line,
giving GSL a 14-7 advantage.
The Fire punted after eight
plays on its second possession.
Starting at their own 45 yard
line, the Panthers gained 30
yards on a first-down pass to
Jacob Popelka, which brought
them to the Holy Family 27.
After four consecutive rushes
by Stuedemann, it was 21-7
after the senior ran it in from
four yards out.
It was almost 28-7 heading
into halftime, but a deep pass
along the sideline slipped
through Stuedemann’s fingers
which surely would have led to
paydirt.
The third quarter started off
with a Holy Family punt after
the Fire gained some positive
yardage, but lost 11 yards on a
fumbled snap, which stymied
the offense.
A signature GSL drive en-
sued on the team’s first posses-
sion of the second half at its
own 20 yard line.
Driving 80 yards in five min-
utes, the Panthers tallied anoth-
er touchdown when Stuede-
mann lowered his pads on the
thirteenth play for a two-yard
score. The extra point attempt
was no good, leaving the score
at 27-7.
Another Holy Family punt
put the Panthers on their own
36 yard line.
This time, Anderson did the
bulk of the work, rushing five
times for 39 yards. He scored
on third and goal after getting
flushed out of the pocket when
he rolled to his left and found
Tanner Grack in the corner of
the endzone to make it 34-7.
Jake Stuedemann lowers his head as he fights off a
tackle from Holy Family’s Eric Requet and crosses
the goal line. Stuedemann had 115 yards on 18 car-
ries, and three touchdowns.
