Stewart City Council moves forward with proposed street improvements

The Stewart City Council moved forward Monday night on three blocks worth of street work, and heard a request for more from a local business.
The City Council held an assessment hearing and awarded a bid for street reconstruction for two blocks of Martha Street and one block of East Street.
“This is mostly street surfacing work,” said Andy Kehren, an engineer with Bolton & Menk.
The city is looking to rebuild two blocks of Martha Street between Prior and Herbert streets, and a block of East Street between Croyden and South Street (Highway 212).
Kehren said the city received four bids for the work, with the lowest submitted by M.R. Paving and Excavating, Inc., of New Ulm. The highest bid came in at $194,677.
According to Kehren, the total cost of the project, with engineering and other fees and a 10 percent contingency, is $228,160. Of that, $172,140 will be paid for through the city’s general fund, and $56,020 by assessments to benefitting properties.
