Ron Pulkrabek, who provided the Silver Lake Leader and The McLeod County Chronicle with a series of “Tracing Roots” articles over the past two years, has compiled his articles into a book.
The book is 152 pages long and contains 78 articles and 50 photographs, and is spiralbound with a colorful cover.
Pulkrabek gives a brief history of the Czechlands and the living conditions under 400 years of Austrian rule, six years of Nazi rule, and 45 years of Communist Russian rule. He still has contact with a sixth cousin who lives in Prague, and who was lost to the Pulkrabek family for 50 years due to the Nazi and Russian domination. Pulkrabek and his extended family visited relatives in Czechoslovakia in 1985, while it was under strict Russian dominance. He and his wife have been back to Czechoslovakia four more times, tracing the roots of the Anderles, Urbans, Pulkrabeks and Ardolfs.
He tells about the hardships of all nationalities and the immigrant families who came to America and to Minnesota, with hard physical work and many hardships, and built farm sites and towns where none previously existed. He tells about real people doing real things in Silver Lake, Glencoe and the surrounding area.
The cost of the book is $12. If it is mailed, the cost is $15 to cover postage. For more information, call Ron Pulkrabek at 320-864-3668. His mailing address is 15738 Jade Ave., Glencoe MN 55336.
