The Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team earned itself some championship hardware on Saturday, Jan. 9. The Panthers won the 36th annual Ogilvie Lion Invitational with a sensational come-from-behind performance, and they did so without two of their top performers in co-captains Tristan Weber and Nick Brelje.
GSL/LP trailed by upwards of three-dozen points going into wrestlebacks, but rallied through the consolation brackets to claim 190.5 points total – just 1.5 points better than runner-up Zimmerman, which finished with 189. St. Croix Falls was third with 146 points.
Cody Rae, added to the Panthers’ lineup on Saturday morning, made good on the team’s hopes by winning the 170-pound weight class with three wins – including a win by fall over Zimmerman’s Calvin Waterhouse in the championship match.
Peyton Sell’s championship at 220 points technically clinched the meet title for GSL/LP. Sell defeated Columbia Heights’ Mohamed Hegazi 9-2 to go 2-0 in his bracket following a first-round bye.
The Panthers had four individual victors at the meet at Aaron Donnay and Alex Mielke also won at 138 and 145, respectively.
