To the Editor:
We are writing to encourage you to attend your local precinct caucuses on Tuesday, March 1. It’s there you can have a voice in determining what issues should be addressed by our government — issues such as taxation, regulations, social issues, etc.
Another reason to attend is because there are some who would like to see the caucus system eliminated. They cite a lack of participation as a reason for doing so. If caucuses were eliminated, the voice of individual citizens would be greatly suppressed. Under a primary system only it would be much harder for issues to arise from the grassroots and for candidates to garner grassroots support. Without the caucus system the media would have much more power to manipulate voter opinions.
Because of the above, we strongly urge you to attend your local Republican Party caucus. It’s a great opportunity to meet your local Republican leaders and others who share your values and views. Those who attend will elect precinct leaders, elect delegates to the county convention, have the opportunity to express their views, discuss public policy, suggest resolutions for the county convention, and cast a ballot for the presidential candidate of their choice.
A government of the people, by the people, for the people starts with you. Political party positions are shaped and candidates selected by the people who show up and participate.
To find out where the Republican precinct caucuses are being held in McLeod County, visit McLeodGOP.com. You could also contact the county auditor’s office 320-864-1260, or do an Internet search: caucus
finder.sos.state.mn.us. On the basis of your address, the location of your precinct caucus will be identified.
We hope to see you on Tuesday, March 1, at 7 p.m.
John Grein, Secretary
McLeod County
