As he has done since 2000, Glencoe-Silver Lake assistant girls’ basketball coach took some time out of his duties with the Panthers in February to help serve a higher purpose in the Dominican Republic.
Prehn, who on this trip was joined for the third time by daughter Gina Prehn, not only put his skills to use building a mission house, but also put his coaching acumen to use by helping conduct basketball camps for Dominican youth.
“We get more out of the trip than the people we are helping,” Dave Prehn said.
This trip, he also had the added joyful task of walking a local woman named Dariana – whom he had first met when she was still a child on his initial mission trip 14 years ago – down the aisle at her wedding. Gina was also in the wedding as one of Dariana’s bridesmaids.
“That was a really big deal going down this year and having that honor,” Dave Prehn said.
