Girls’ track is working hard

As weeks of practices have gone by, Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ track and field coach Robb DeCorsey is sure of one thing: his team has a strong work ethic.
“Girls have been working really hard,” he said. “I’ve been very impressed.”
Now, it is just a matter of whether hard work will pay off. The team’s season began with a second-place finish at Mankato last week. But, the coach said that before we know it, the season will be over.
“Conference, subsection, section meets – they’ll all be here before we know it,” DeCorsey said. “Many of these girls have put in a lot of time in the offseason and I really want to see that hard work pay off.
“I want to see these girls stay competitive throughout the season. In past years, girls have come in fired up, but then ease up if the first meets of the season don’t go the right way.”
The Panthers return several of their top performers from last season, and the program’s overall numbers are on the rise, leading to competition at several positions and the ability to better fill out the varsity roster.
“We’ve got quite a few of our studs back,” DeCorsey said. Emily Muetzel, Deanna Bondhus, Taylor Novak, Shelby Clouse and Maddie Monahan.
“Monahan is really pushing to get to state in the 300 hurdles, where she broke the school record in sections last year. She’s looking strong in workouts and I think she’s going to have an outstanding season.”
DeCorsey also points to the 4x200-meter relay team of Monahan, Muetzel, Clouse and Novak as being “solid” and having a shot at making it to the state meet.
