To the Editor:
We are all set and ready to go for a wonderful school year at GSL. This school year, our official start date will be on Aug. 29 for all students in grades three through 12. For grades K-2, Aug. 29 is a check-in day and Aug. 30 will be the first day of school. For parents who have students at Helen Baker, you have been notified of your check-in time.
The annual open house for all of our schools is tonight (Wednesday, Aug. 24) from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. We hope to see many families stopping in and visiting, greeting teachers, and becoming familiar with the building layout. It certainly is an exciting time of year.
Our construction project continues and, as you can see, the ground work continues. We have all the logistical issues worked out in terms of how things will work on a day-to-day basis during the school year. With that said, there will be some bumps in the road as we go along. Thank you for your patience and support during the construction process.
I also want to say thank you for making safety a top priority. With the start of school, we will see an increase in the number of vehicles, bikes, and walkers coming to and from school. Please continue to take it slow and concentrate on driving. In the end, it will be worth it, and we will have improvements to our facilities for our kids and community!
Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year. Here’s wishing all kids a wonderful and experience-filled school year.
Christopher D. Sonju
Superintendent of Schools
