Henry “Butch” Henkelmann, 71, of Glencoe, died Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016, in Glencoe.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 6, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe with the Rev. Daniel Welch officiating. Dawn Wolter was the organist. Soloist Shari Templin sang “On Eagle’s Wings.” The congregational hymn was “Amazing Grace.”
Honorary casket bearers were Jackson Henkelmann, Riley Messner and Brody Messner. Casket bearers were Jasen Henkelmann, Tony Henkelmann, Roger Gutzke, Terry Molitor, Jeremy Templin and Henry Reiner.
Interment was in the church cemetery.
Henry “Butch” Harold Henkelmann was born Feb. 25, 1945, in Glencoe, the son of Henry and Helen (Dvorak) Henkelmann. He was baptized as an infant on March 25, 1945, by the Rev. Alf. Streufert and was confirmed in his faith by the Rev. A.H. Fellwock, both at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe. He received his education in Glencoe, graduating with the Glencoe High School class of 1963.
On Feb. 7, 1980, he was united in marriage to Sherry Sue Mathews in Watertown, South Dakota. The couple made their home in Glencoe, and their marriage was blessed with three children, Kim, Grant and Dustin. They shared over 36 years of marriage.
Mr. Henkelmann was a third-generation farmer and herdsman and loved farming. He was a fixture in the Glencoe area as he also hauled can milk to the old Glencoe Creamery for many local herdsmen for years. He later started Butch’s Masonry and enjoyed helping others with their mason work. He was a helpful neighbor and a good friend to many. He was a lifelong member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe.
He liked to play as hard as he worked. His passion was farming. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, wrestling and a good football game. One of his favorite memories was antelope hunting in Wyoming with his “boys.” He especially enjoyed the time spent with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Sherry (nee Mathews) Henkelmann of Glencoe; sons, Grant Henkelmann and Dustin Henkelmann and his wife, Ashley (nee Garee), all of Glencoe; daughter, K. Lenna Henkelmann of New Orleans, Louisiana; grandsons, Jasen Henkelmann, Tony Henkelmann and Jackson Henkelmann; sister, Delores (nee Henkelmann) Reiner and her husband, Alan, of Hutchinson; and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Helen Henkelmann; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Eldor and Mertle Mathews; brothers-in-law, Al Schmerbauch and Dean Mathews; sister-in-law, Carol Muchow; and niece, Stacie Muchow.
