For the second consecutive season, the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team came up three points short in its quest to win the Hayfield Tournament.
After falling 54-51 to Hayfield in the tourney’s championship game last season, this year the Panthers were upended 65-62 by the Vikings in the title round and wrap up the 2016 portion of their season with a 5-4 record.
“It was a tough game, but a fun game,” coach Jeff Monahan said. “We wanted to win and it stung not to do so, but the experience will make us better down the stretch.”
This year’s tournament run followed last year’s script almost to the letter.
Prior to losing to the hosts in the final, GSL bested Caledonia in the tourney opener.
However, whereas the Panthers downed the Warriors by 10 points last season, this time around GSL hung a 32-point loss on its competition – winning 74-42 on Wednesday, Dec. 28.
