This past weekend, Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) Knowledge Bowl teams went two directions. The seventh-and eighth-grade teams went to Central Minnesota Christian School (CMCS) in Prinsburg, while the high school teams went to St. Francis High School for its Rumble on the Rum. (CMCS is a relatively small school in the region, and had asked GSL to send no more than three teams, but GSL has seven to eight teams.)
At CMCS, the top junior high team won its portion of the meet with 112.5 points, while GSL’s other two teams finished in seventh and 12th. The members of the winning team were Summer Hayes, Eli Kuehn, Paul Sievert, Zach Reichow and Nathan Warner.
The Rumble on the Rum had 56 teams (33 varsity and 23 junior varsity), giving GSL competition from schools ranging from Buffalo, Big Lake and Elk River to Prior Lake, Academy of Holy Angels and Centennial. The competition was run together, so that junior varsity teams were sometimes competing against varsity, but awards and ranks were given separately at the end. This meet was a little unusual in scoring because the oral rounds only had 39 points.
GSL’s Supernova started in Room One with the second highest written (40), and won rounds one to three (17-10-8, 14-13-4, 12-8-8). By rounds three and four, the three eventual top placers were in Room One, and in round four, GSL tied Rogers with 10 each, while Buffalo only earned 8 points. Supernova was the only team to have been in Room One for the entire meet and won the meet with a score of 99.0. Buffalo earned second place with 86.5, while Rogers got third with 86.0. The team members of Supernova included Jake Fehrenbach, Austin Pinske, Katie Twiss and Jake Vasek.
Meanwhile GSL’s second varsity team moved from Room Four to Room Two, back to Room Four, finishing in Room Three. It had 15 points in round one, but really struggled in rooms two and three, and finished the meet in 12th place with 64.5 points. This was excellent performance against the caliber of teams at this meet. The team included Brett Baumgarten, Jack Gepson, Maggie Petersen, Laura Popelka and Jacob Reichow.
GSL’s two junior varsity teams finished in 12th place of JV (38th overall, with 47.0 points) and in 16th place of JV (47th overall with 41.0 points). The JV teams were Kalie Butcher, Lexi Fronk, Abby Gronlund, Haley Lukes and Carlee Oberlin; and Beth Cross, Megan Fehrenbach, Nathan Fehrenbach, Cole Janke and Charles Urban. Many of these students were experiencing their first meet in JV, and they did an excellent job of meeting the tougher competition that JV and varsity questions and teams provide.
One unique feature of the St. Francis meet is the “Triple Team Trophy.” Scores of the top three teams from each school are added together, and then the school with the highest total score earns the trophy. This measures the quality and depth of a program. GSL had won this trophy in both 2015 and 2016. This year the trophy was won by Buffalo with a total score of 216.5. GSL came in second with a total was 210.5. This confirmed their coach’s feeling that GSL has some of the best Knowledge Bowl teams in the state.
