To the Editor:
We have a real problem pushing so many paved trails in McLeod County. The effect of local politicians are going to cause farmers and taxpayers tremendous financial harm. Look at the bad condition of the Luce Line trail that was paved only a year and a half ago.
The trail already has cracks the size of a quarter wide by 50 feet long. Who is going to fix these cracks and when?
Last fall I wrote a letter to the paper with a photo that showed the side horse trail, under water. The DNR should have fixed the drainage tiling before paving. Because the Luce Line trails goes through my family’s farm I see how bad the trail condition is becoming and how few people use the trail. I’ve had so many people call me about my letter on irresponsible spending to say thank you.
We had a trail before with many users suchs as walkers, regular and mountain bikers, runners and horses that cost the taxpayers nothing! Now after spending millions, a taxpayer money pit has been created that needs expensive maintenance that will cause more county tax increases.
The Hutch paper said last fall that auto counters on the trail, last July at County Road 4, only recorded a hight of 34 counts – only 17 people both ways. Most days when I am farming, I see no one.
We have a real problem spending millions of dollars for only 17 people using something that already needs repair. It’s time to drain the swamp in McLeod County and stop this wasteful spending!
