A familiar, cheerful face that used to roam the streets of Glencoe will be missed.
Keith “Hermie” Herrmann retired Friday, June 2, from his job as a carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, a career that spanned over 36 years.
In about 1980, Herrmann’s mother began escorting him around to take the civil service test, a requirement for being hired by the Postal Service. He had to take the test at each potential hiring site, and spent nearly every Saturday for about two months taking the test around the area.
“I got really good at it,” Herrmann laughed.
He started with the Postal Service in Howard Lake, and then went to Lester Prairie, where he worked for then Postmaster Milo Kubasch.
After about 11⁄2 years there, Herrmann and fellow carrier Greg Copas began working part time in Glencoe, with fill-in shifts in Hutchinson and Waconia. Eventually, both were taken on full time in Glencoe.
Herrmann said his walking route averaged seven to eight miles in an average day. Although the Postal Service has no official creed or motto, the words “neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds” is often associated with mail carriers.
